Strange piggy behavior

CavyBroadcastingSystem

This is my first experience w/ this behavior, and I was wondering if anyone else on here has heard of/seen it and could explain it to me.

First off, this is not our first piggy. We've had four before her, both males and females.
Her name is Penny and we got her Tuesday night from Petco - I liked her b/c she was nice and calm and let me pet her right away.
She is still in quarantine, but she can see/hear our other pig in the next wire cage, so I don't think she's lonely. Penny doesn't make much noise at all compared to my other wheekie, Cookie, who will call me for 5 minutes even after I've left the room. She spends 99% of her time in her sleeping bag, and when I do go in to pull her out, she has no physical reaction to my touch at all. Her eyes are half-closed and she just sits there. The first time I touched her, I thought she had died! ?/ She even felt cool and stiff - freaky! She doesn't even move until I lift her up off the ground, and then she'll "wake up" and kick her feet for footing. I was so scared the first time this happened. Then, I was hoping she would get over it in a few days. It's been 3 days so far and she still reacts this way, every time I pick her up. Could this be normal cavy behavior? Has anyone else had a piggy act this way?

Another thing I noticed about Penny is the way she jumps when she's sitting on my lap. She's not curious at all like Cookie and will sit perfectly still on my legs, or climb up into my hair if I have it down. There she'll sit for hours if I let her. While unusual in my experience, this I could attribute to personality. But sometimes while sitting here, her little body will "jump" or "jerk" like someone has poked her w/ a pin. Her eyes widen when this happens, so I know she feels something, whether it's just her body moving or she feels actual pain. Could this be nerves or something? This jerking will continue for the entire time she's here, so it's not like she calms down and it goes away.

Like I said, I have never had a pig act like this, so I don't know if she's sick or if this is her personality. She seems to be eating alright, although she doesn't eat much fresh fruit or veg (she does seem to like dandelion leaves, though) when she's in my lap. But then again, I never see her out of her sleeping bag, so I have no idea how many pellets she's eating. My kids accidentally dumped her food bowl yesterday and I had to refill it, so I don't know how much she had eaten until then. She still poops like a trooper, though - in the time it took me to carry her back to her cage just now (one room away), she had pooped 11 times in my hand (yes, I counted them :red ).

Sorry this is so long. I am just a bit worried, and I want to make sure to get her to a vet if these are signs of sickness. It's mostly the jerky/jumpy action, the continuous stay in the sleeping bag and the frozen piggy stance she takes on while in there. I hope I'm just paranoid!

I am no expert but have heard that jumping like you describe could be due to a fungal infection as this can effect the nerve endings - does her body condition look ok?

She could just be scared and taking a while to adjust to your house hence the sitting in the bed all the time and freezing when you come near- or I guess it could be something serious hopefully someone who knows will come along and help you out soon!?!

I guess if in doubt listen to your instincts, she's not your first piggy so you can probably sense if something serious is wrong with her.

I would say that she's still settling in as far as the hiding. It's still only been 3 days, takes many piggies weeks to a month to settle in. I have ones that made themselves at home the moment they got here and others that still aren't 100% comfortable and they have been here almost 2 months. Every piggy is different, like us humans. ;)

As for the other stuff, I know nothing about...seems odd, but someone more enlightened can hopefully help.

She looks absolutely petrified by humans and must have come from a horrible home where she was handled very roughly, if she was handled at all!

Try to send her soothing and loving thoughs whenever you speak to her. leave he to settle in her own time (it may take a week!). She seems to be eating OK when she's alone. Make sure she's got plenty of hay nearby. Offer her little treats and then leave them where she can get them from her hiding place. Talk to her gently all the time, s sson as you come into the room.

For safety, I would have her checked by a vet to see whether she has any skin condition etc.

When you take her out, do it in short bursts and leave her be for the time being. A good way to get her used to humans is to let her hide under your pullover, so she has the protection, but also the smell. Little, but often does it!

Try not to tower over her or stare her in the eye like the predator you are!

I have had a number of pigs that exhibit the same behaviour.
I have to say that I am always suspicious when it happens, I wonder if they are showing signs of heart problems. Very, very occasionally checking the heart beat may show some abnormality eg irregular rhythm or a weak beat. Quite a number of pigs with this condition object to having a hand placed under the chest to lift them. I find that fit pigs don't object to being handled that way.
Another possibility, could it be sleep apnoea?

I dislike submitting a post which is highly speculative. I agree I cannot substanstiate my theory.

Thanks, guys. I wasn't sure whether to put this post here or in Behavior, but I figured I'd rather take the chance and put it here in case there's something medically wrong w/ her, which was causing her strange behavior.

I didn't notice any other symptoms from that link, re: a heart condition, besides the not running away part. Thanks for the link, though. I feel better that she doesn't seem to fit under those symptoms.

Thank you all for responding. I will repost an update.

I just wanted to post an update.

After a few more days, I noticed that Penny had "woken up" and was becoming much more active. She still sits pretty still when I pick her up (strange for us - after 3 other pigs who have to be coaxed into coming to our hands), but will run around and check the place out once on the floor, and will toss my hand off of her head when she gets sick of being petted. She has also stopped that strange jumping/jerking she had been doing. I'm thinking it was probably just nerves. She seems happy and bouncy now. :))

Thank you for all of your thoughts and posts.

awwwwwwwwww that's good :)
Best of luck with Penny xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>
Perhaps keep an eye on her, if any changes go to your vets.
Any pigtures of this little one? x)
