Hi,

before going into details, a few short notes:

I have 2 guinea pigs, - male and female
male has scab issue, female doesn't - they are in the same cage
male is castrated, female is not
they are normally happy, eating well, all is ok with that part.

So my male pig - Teddy, he has these scabs appearing on his back and behind... first they were spreading, and than they stopped. when I touch that part of the skin he feels extreme uncomfort. Scabs keep falling off all the time, but new ones appear. when scab falls off it takes parts of his fur, but a new fur is always growing back, so he is not bald permanently.
I checked these scabs with vet, he found some minor mites on scabs. I treated him with Stronghold (anti-mites cure) 3 times - it should be more than enough- mites are gone, but scabs keep appearing and my vet doesn't know what to do with them.
Like I said... scabs are not spreading now, they stay in the same place.
When I remove the scab, there is NO blood or any kind of wound below it... just clean skin.

Does anyone have any idea what this might be?

Thank you for your answer

Hi, please could you update your location on your profile as it will help us to help you. Does the hair seem greasy at all and does it come out easily when you tug gently? I am suspecting fungal in which case the treatment would be different to that for mites. They can also get fungal at the same time as mites due to the immune system being compromised. I would take him to the vet to ask about fungal. Please note though that only fungal shows up on a culture done by the vet but there are many types of fungal.

I updated my location :)

Hair is not greasy, normal dry, and it comes out easily, most of it is already detached from skin so it's just stuck in fur... but if I try to pick it out directly from the skin, it also goes out easily, but my pig is really nervous when I do it.

I will see with my vet about fungal infection!

thanks for the answer

went to the vet today, and I got 2 10ml doses of anti fungal shampoo to bathe him!
thanks helen for the help! will let you know how it progresses
