Strange urine color?

Hi everyone,

This is what I have been seeing in my 2 boar’s cage for a while now. I didn’t thing much of it until I watched a video where the person said that it could be an illness. I’m not sure if this person is entirely trustworthy thought.
I have noticed that one of our boars, Fizz, does small wees when he’s out of the cage and I saw him do this earlier today on the cage floor while I was changing their fleece.
I don’t know if this is a problem, I have noticed this since I have been using fleece, around the 2nd week of March.
Is this a problem?

Hello! White powder in urine usually means there is too much calcium in their diet. Are you feeding high calcium foods like kale, spinach, parsley, often? This can turn into a problem as too much calcium can lead to bladder stones. Also, make sure to only give 1tbs of nuggets per pig per day and filter your water if you live in a hard water area.

Please post a list of what you feed them.

We definitely have hard water so we will buy a water filtering jug for them. I will check that they aren’t squeaking or looking like they are in any pain when they pee but I’m pretty sure they aren’t. Thank you @MWpiggies!

Milky White stains is actually perfectly normal. It is the way they expel excess calcium from their bodies. It is only a problem if when you touch it feels gritty. If it feels gritty then have a vet check done, and take a look at their diet. Any diet changes take a while to have an effect though.

Limiting calcium intake by ensuring you limit pellets and filter drinking water is the best way to limit the amount of calcium they intake. There is more calcium in pellets than the highest calcium veg. You should still limit the high calcium veg they eat also though. It is a good idea to feed a leafy veg wet diet as it helps flush the bladder through

Nothing out of the ordinary there that is just excess calcium being deposited.

As long as it doesn’t feel gritty, No need to worry. Powdery white deposits are completely normal

Powdery is fine, it’s when it’s gritty that you have to be alert. As mentioned above, try to filter the water and make sure you limit pellets to one tablespoon per pig per day. Also limit the amount of high calcium veg - kale, spinach and parsley.

I am giving the piggies bottled water that has less calcium in it.
