STRAW yes or no

Wouldn't use woodshavings either. I don't use it but chopped soft straw is fine. I was surprised just how soft it is. It's not a substitute for hay, though.

straw

Like you, I did use straw for my guineas one time when nothing else was available. Although they loved it and didn't come to any harm I wouldn't use it again now I know the potential risks. You could just use as much hay as possible on top of newspaper when shavings are hard to come by, which is what I do most of the time. then they can eat it, play in it and make a cosy den. I believe some people also use fleece on the cage bottom or vet bed? I haven't tried either yet but there are some posts on housing threads about them and they sound pretty good.:)

Personally I would not use straw, as it can be dangerous for piggies. It can poke their eyes etc.

The spiky harvest straw can do but barley straw, Russel Rabbit straw & other brands of soft chopped straw carries virtually no risk, i won't say no risk at all because you never know :)

I agree, no sawdust, no wood shavings, I use soft chopped straw topped with lots of hay and have never had any problems with any of my own or my foster piggies.
