I got back from taking my 3 girls to the vets a while ago to all have a general health check and nail trim. They have all been given a great bill of health.

However, when I got them home, I noticed a big wee on the blue fleece in the carrier and on the edge of it was a smear of proper blood :( Now, I am not sure if it was actually in the wee or just happened to be there. The wee had soaked through the fleece and on to the newspaper and there was no blood there. The wee where the blood was looked perfectly normal apart from the smear of blood on the edge. I even soaked the wee up with white paper towel and it dried a normal yellow colour.

Eliza has had a UTI before but there was never any 'proper' blood smeared and the urine dried a reddy / orange colour and looked a reddy orange colour.

I have checked all 3 girls and can not see any cuts or anything. I rang my hubby ad he said may be one of their nails were cut a bit short but neither of them squeaked in pain and their feet and toes look normal.

I have looked in the hutch and can not see anything suspicious in there and all the wee's look normal on the newspaper.

I have all 3 girls out at the minute but the only one who has wee'd is Erin and her urine looked normal. Eleanor and Eliza have been out with Erin for over 2 hours and haven't wee'd mallethead

When I was in the vets, there was a mad dog who kept barking viciously near the pigs and scared them :( Could his be a reason?

I am going frantic at the minute as I do not understand where the blood has came from :( Is it possible for a pig to have a smear of blood in there urine and have nothing wrong? I don't even know if the blood was actually in the wee :(

Sorry for the frantic thread but I am a worrier :...:...

My initial thought was nails. It could be that one was just a bit too short, and has stopped bleeding now? xx

Firstly whee want to send some lovings for you and the girlies xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Try not to panick! i know easier said than done :{
Watch what happens today...........then off to the vets tomorrow if you find any other signs.
Have you any cranberry juice you can syringe or get them all to drink? Cause if by chance it is a UTI that will help.
WIshing you all the best Claire from us all xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Try not to panic - female guinea pigs can have "one off" bleeds for no apparent reason.

If you see signs of blood again, then of course, take them straight back to the vet.

You poor thing Claire, I know you worry so much about these girls. I agree with Jane, it's more than likely to have just been one of the nails cut a tiny bit too short - if only the very tip of the quick was caught, it would be enough to cause a smear of blood yet you'll have a hard time spotting that on the nails.

I'm sure your three beautiful girls are fine, easier said than done but try to relax. :)

I would agree. maybe a small bit of bleeding from a nail and the wee just soaked around where the piggie was sitting?

Id keep an eye out for anymore (obvious adivce I know!) and see what happens.

Thank you everyone. I really am a worry pot. I have just sat with the pigs for the last 3 hours. All have had a wee and everything was normal. No squeaking or blood. I have even cleaned the hutch out just to make sure I haven't missed anything.

I have checked the girls feet and can't see anything. Then again, if the nail had already bled, would I even notice anything now?

Eleanor has been in season as well this last day or so and has been humping anything in sight. Could that be another possible reason?

My first thought before reading everyone else's comments was that a nail had been cut too short - then I saw others suggested it too. And if it only had a little bleed, then by the time you came to look at it, there'd be nothing to see.

I know you worry about your girls, but if you've now seen them all wee without problem, hopefully that's what it was - "only" a nail. But of course you'll keep an eye on them all anyway - just please try not to worry too much.

I can't offer any advice but I hope your guinea-pigs are ok

I'm sure that they are all fine and i agree that it may have been just from their nail. Try not to panic too much and just monitor the weeing as your doing now.

I too am very panicky and stress over little things and i know their are lots of other piggys mummies that worry too, so your not alone there! :))

:)
