My boar has strong smelling wee and was very listless this morning, he feels like he has lost weight too. There was some blood in his urine this morning.

The vet has given us an antibiotic and we are giving him this but is there anything else we can do?

Which antibiotic has he given you? and has he given you a pro biotic as well?
It is wise to give extra water via syringe, especially if he is not a big water drinker as this flushes out his bladder :) Sometimes antibiotics or if he is feeling unwell can affect appetite so offer food/hay by hand. If he doesnt accept this, you may have to syringe feed him as well.

Have a look here http://www.guinealynx.com/uti.html Did the vet say what it was? Is he eating? If not you have to get some solids into him, mash some pellets or critical care if you have any and also fluids so he doesn't dehydrate and to keep his kidney's and bladder flushed.

Hope he will be ok.

Thank you for the replies. We don't know which antibiotic it is, the vet said it would cover all that type of thing? The vet just does not know much about Guinea Pigs so we just described his symptoms. He ate a little earlier and we are giving him water.

hoping your little baby gets better. if your vet is not piggy savy, i would find out what antibiotic was given and then find a vet who is piggy savy. my piggy is female and when she was wetting herself and bleeding it was found she had a mass growing on her uterus. so i would find out what the vet gave him and take him to a piggy savy vet. good luck and hoping your little man gets better. if he(vet) is not piggy savy hoping the antibiotic he gave your piggy is piggy safe as a lot of them can be fatal to piggies. sorry i am being blunt, but from my own experience and what i have read here on the forums alot of piggies have lost their lives to vets who know nothing about piggies. i am really hoping your baby gets better! so please find out what was given to your baby and seek a second opinion. hugs and cuddles to you and your baby. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

One of my piggies had this last August, just after we got him.
We were given Baytril (antibiotic) I know there are others that are prescribed too.
After just a couple of days Harry was like a different piggy.
Sounds to me like you are doing all the right things.
Hopefully you will see an improvement soon.
Good luck.

Baytril is commonly prescribed but the better one for a UTI is septrin. More likely you have baytril. It is best to check if you can to make sure he has been given a suitable one. He should really have a pro biotic such as bio lapis given 2 hours after his antibiotic as the ab can upset the gut flora causing diahorrea. You vet should stock this.
Also, are you giving the ab via a syringe? some vets say to put it in the drinking water but you cant be sure they are getting the proper doasage that way :)

I will try and check with the vet which antibiotic he has and about the pro-biotic. The vet did say to give it in his water but we gave it to him with a syringe as we weren't sure he would drink it otherwise. He is looking very poorly :(

You nee4d to find a better vet asap. This piggy needs an x ray, there may be stones in the bladder.,or there could be a tumour.l Never, ever, give a amedication to a piggy if you do not know what it is .Septrin at the dose rate of 0.3 mls a day is the best for UTI but Baytril is better than nothing.

As another member has said, give lots of water by syringe to flush the bladder, this is very important.

Thanks for all the replies.

I am in rural France so changing my Vet is not that simple. The vet prescribed that antibiotic based on his symptoms, all I can do is trust in her professional judgement on that.

We are hand feeding him and obviously will see the vet again if he's still not good in a few days time.

Did the vet give you any analgesic for him?, if it is stones he will be in discomfort.

hoping your little piggy gets better. sending hugs and cuddles to you and your piggy. it is hard when your in a rural area. perhaps you could do some research on the net. keep giving him water and keep him warm. if he stops eating boil some water and mash pellets in the water and feed him this on a spoon. good luck and really hope your fur baby gets better. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Thanks :) We mashed up his pellets with some boiled water and spoon fed him tonight, he was keen to eat so that's a good sign. Gave him water syphoned into a straw too which he seemed to like once he stopped trying to bite the straw!

In my opinion, a good vet is one who will listen. You will gather a lot of useful information on here and some rodentologists may be willing to speak/email your vet with correct information if he doesnt know. Not that many vets, even here in UK are good with guinea pigs. Maryh`s vet was in touch with Choloes vet is Austrailia when her piggy had to have a serious operation or Vedra at the Cambridgeshire Cavy Trust may be willing to speak to you or him. I will hunt for her number and post it here :)

Her mobile number is 07721 026401 it is best to text her and explain the situation and she will be in touch.

I know another girl in France and she has the same problem, no piggie savvy vets :'( :'(
Good luck we'll have our paws crossed for your little one :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
See if you can get some Critical Care or Recovery sent to you i know you can order it from the Oxbow web site O0 It's got all the nutrients etc.. that a piggie needs :)
I hope you've been able to call Vedra :)

i am really glad your piggy is eating and hopefully your baby will continue to improve. sending hugs and cuddles to you and your fur baby. please keep us posted as to how your fur babies goes. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
