I have 2 male/female pairs who live with me in the living room all year round. I feed both pairs exactly the same food, which is hay as a main, and every evening they individually sit on my shoulder and have celery, cucumber, peppers beans and some lettuce. For some time now there is a strong smell coming from one of the pairs that greets me at the door!, even though their fleece has been washed and renewed only a few hours before. Milly, the sow, drinks lots of water, so I would have thought this would dilute her urine. To be fair, it could be that the boar is the culprit. Other than this, they appear healthy and happy. Anyone else have this prolem? I alternate fleece with vetbed but it makes no difference.

Guinea pigs aren't meant to have beans. Eliminate this from their diet. What type of hay are you using?

Please have your piggy pair vet checked for a cystitis (bladder infection). In a sow, the strong smell can also come from an infected or fluid filled uterus.

Green/French beans etc. and mangetout are perfectly OK to feed.

Oh, I've specially grown some french beans in my garden for them :( I will eat them myself from now on. They have have from various sources including pet shops, a local animal feed warehouse and local supermarket.

Sorry, I should have typed 'they have hay' and not 'have have' - should have gone to specsavers lol

I would just like to add that what I said may not entirely be true for every piggie. This is info I have gathered from my research and the experiences of others I know. Ask your vet about the beans.
So sorry I didn't add this earlier!
Thanks, Leena (slave to Mimi and Creamie😊

Munchmoste it is safe for piggies to eat french beans ! i had a pig last week who had smelly urine,it was urinenary tract infection.pop along to your vet !i agree with Wiebke good advice as always.

Sorry for my misunderstandings! It's just that a lot of research I have done had said beans aren't OK..

French beans and mangetout are perfectly safe to feed, as are all pods.

The green casing of beans and peas is fine to feed. Mine get a french bean daily; it is the favourite of a number of my piggies.
What should not be fed is the beans themselves.

I hope that the pictures below will clear up the issue and any potential misunderstandings. ;)

PS: I know that pea flakes are quite a favourite of many people, but they should only be fed as an occasional treat and not as a regular part of the diet unless you are not feeding any pellets, which contain protein.
