I have 2 males, Malcom aged 1, recently lost his elderly bonded mate, cheeky, mischievous teenager. Spud - rescued aged about 2 lived alone for last year, placid and sweet but looks like a potato with fur. Anyway, I have attempted bonding once or twice, following all guidelines but it looked nasty quite quickly and I quickly separated them. They live side by side, each has a 3 x 2 grid and regular time in a secure garden separate. Side by side living has been going fine. They talk to each other, sleep next to each other, no rumble strutting etc.
This morning I have come down to find Malcom in spuds section, I am not sure if he jumped over or somehow went under. Spud looked a bit traumatised, so I put malc back in his bit and checked over spud, it looks like he might have a bite on the bum, but it doesn’t look fresh so not sure, there is a bit of fur missing and what looks like a small scab.
Malc went nuts trying to get back to spuds side after separation so he has been put in the garden while I decide what to do.
I am not sure how best to proceed. Keep them separate, as in away from the other so they can’t get in each others space? Put in a more robust divide? I also don’t want them to be lonely but looks like malc isn’t the best cage mate although he got along well with his older bonded male very recently. Any advice would be appreciated.
