Hi everyone. My piggy Spike has been having problems on and off with poo stuck in his bottom. He's 2 years old but has had lots of health issues, he was castrated and the op went wrong. Although he is fine now his wee dribbles down under and makes things soggy, so we think this is what's causing the problem? It used to just be every now and then but it seems to be getting more frequent. We've started giving him fibreplex (which is helping a bit) but was wondering if anyone had any other remedies? It goes without saying that we help him evacuate his bowels 2-3 times a day and clean him up. We try to feed him the poops but he won't take them, it's a bit of a worry that it's happening more often. Should we be supplementing his diet in this case? Any advice would be appreciated, he seems young to be having a weak rectum (can't think of the proper term!) But he hasn't been right since the surgery. He's been checked by a vet a few times and everything seems ok. He's not in pain and eats and drinks well, just the botty problem!
Thanks in advance x

Oh poor Spike :(

I think lots of fibre (hay is best) & good water intake is probably a good thing. What is his diet? Is the stuck poo like impaction in an older boar?

Is that him in your avatar pic? If so, he's a cutie :)

Impaction can happen at any age in boars although more common in older piggies. I've read you can give vitamin B complex to aid the vitamins they are missing but despite keeping piggies for years i've only had 2 males with it and they did used to eat droppings that came out so i didn't try supplementing. Be interested to hear what others so as got 6 boys now :)

They have hay and ready grass. Then twice a day they get a load of veg. Lettuce, celery, carrot, spinach and cucumber. Sometimes brocolli and parsley. He eats really well and drinks loads. It is like impaction, this morning it was pretty bad and he stank :( Degu rock, we have 6 boars too! Only had one other boar with this **** but he was older. Boars are the best!
No that's Jasper who went over the rainbow bridge, here's Spike

One of my last piggies had impaction and it does smell. It might have been the stress of things at some point caused it at a younger age as read that can be a cause. It does sound like impaction in my opinion. Boars do rule, people say they don't get on but mine are fine, think key is plenty of space to get away from each other :)

Aww Spike is lovely. x) I don't have any experience of impaction, but my Dougal does need his sack cleaning out sometimes and it's a very smelly, unpleasant task. :x

They are both very handsome pigs in those pics :)

Not sure what to suggest about the impaction, you could search guinealynx to see if anybody there has had the same issue following surgery in a younger piggie.

According to the Peter Gurney book Piggy Potions you can give a brewers yeast tablet to make up for lost vitamins for a short period every once in a while, although he does also say that boars do tend to make up for vitamins they lose with impaction by eating more wholefoods such as dried and also they will eat normal pellets :)
