Hi. I am new. Felt I needed to share this story after reading couple of posts. When my girl Was Under 6 months she stopped eating. It Took 3 weeks, four vets and a bout of pneumonia later till I just mentioned parasites to the vet. An injection and day later she started eating all by herself. I made the mistake of falling for a pet shop Guinea and the Guinea specialist I saw Said those that Are continually breed are likely to have worms that are passed on to their young. also parasites can be passed through hay. I made the pet shop pay my £300 bill and thanked the universe that it was me who took her home and force fed her every three hours for for three weeks.
I just wanted people to know that this can happen and if weight loss can't be diagnosed than give worming a go.
Having similar probs With cookie at the mo and wormed her yesterday and taking her to vets to have teeth checked. Am Hoping It is just worms again and she seems to be eating a bit more so fingers crossed!

Please also make sure that he checks her back teeth. Overgrown premolars often go undiagnosed because vets can't deal with it.

How do you keep your guinea pigs? Are they mostly outdoor piggies? In that case, it may be worth worming your piggies regularly. It seems to be not so much an issue with indoors guinea pigs. You can find worming advice in our Caring for an Ill Guinea Pig section.

As we have got members from all over the world, we find it very helpful if you please added your country or county to your details, so we can always adapt any advice and recommendations to what is available or possible where you are. As you can imagine, climate, brands access to vets and rescues differ quite a lot! Click on your username on the top bar, then go to personal details and scroll down to location. Thanks!

Sorry. I can't seem to find how to do that and my phone is now dying so will try tomorrow. Am In IN UK in northants where there is a vet that specialises in grinnies. I am taking her for back teeth check. She has been losing weight slowly for a month but have not noticed her leaving food like last couple of days

Good that you are having her checked out at the Cat&Rabbit Care Clinic; I use it, too. You are in safe hands there, and if there is a dental problem, then it will be sorted. her teeth are going to be checked anyway.
Many vets are unfortunately not very experienced with teeth and dental problems, so it is important for us to make sure that they get checked whenever there is a mystery weight loss involved.

Yes They were really good before. The First vet I saw in village wanted me to euthanise her because she PROBABLY had bad teeth. She wasn't even 6 months old! Needless to say I found another vet. SoSoooo relieved to find find cat and rabbit care clinic. Good news is She is eating Nearly normal today and gaining weight but want piece of mind as already have two sick furries going on
