Went to the pet store today to see if they had a better deal on bedding and saw their guinea pigs.......

they had a Mother and two babies (these babies could not have been over a week old, and were definitely still nursing) and they were in the same tiny cage with another boar! I had no idea he was a boar until I picked him up and held him (he was very lovely, but I don't wanna pay for neutering and extra cage until he healed). I am sure the mommy pig is already pregnant again, assuming the boar has been in the cage with them overnight. The poor mommy was filthy and needed a bath desperately. My Mom called over there and they are still there so I think we're going back over there in the next hour or so and getting them. I know it is buying into the pet store, but the 3 of them are obviously miserable and not being cared for properly. My mom is going to take my extra C&C supplies and make a cage at her house to care for them. Assuming they're still there within the next hour and a half, that way we'll know it was meant to be.

Here's the best part - they're selling the trio for $20 a piece, so my Mom is going to shell out $60 to help these little guys.......ugh Pet Stores.

I think your mum is doing right by getting them though, they sound like they are in a dire need. Good luck with them!x

Thanks! When we get them back to Mom's we're gonna give the mommy a bath, the poor girl was covered in some kind of crud, I mean it's just ridiculous.

We don't have rescues in my state at all, but sadly, who needs them when there are conditions like this in pet stores? :(

pet shops are the same world wide I am in australia and pet shops here will do the same thing, selling underage bubs, sick piggys or houseing boars and sows together, I now go to a pet shop at only sells products, I wont go to ones that sell animals.Good luck with the mum and bubs hope all goes well

This is horrible, but your doing the right thing in my opinion. (other people in a forum I was on before would probably bash you till there was no tomorrow, they would to alot of innocent people that didnt know about adopting.) But its kinda like I have said before, if there is no place to adopt near you, then wouldnt buying one be kinda the same thing? After all your helpping a piggie in need. :(

Well we went and got them! here are the pics!

^ Nursing the babies!

We got them home and weighed them. The babies I am estimating to be a little older than I originally thought (from charts I have seen maybe 3 weeks? let me know if you think different). I tried to sex them but I think they might still be too young.

The little black one (Now called Poppy) is 204g
The little white one (Now called Shotzie) is 250g
The Mommy (Lila) is 615g

I am keeping the piggies at my house for a few days until my Mom is done with her work week and can have a week off to spend with them.
Lila could possibly be pregnant again, I'm gonna monitor her weight. All of them were popcorning and even Pola was popcorning just from hearing them (as she hasn't seen them)....Pola is like a brand new piggy! I can't wait to get her a buddy of her own!

I am utterly thrilled....I feel like we saved some lives and my Pola is a much happier girl!

And thank you all for the support! It is greatly appreciated

They are ADORABLE! I'm sure they are happy to have you as their owner/friend. :)) I know I would be. :)

awwww....thanks!

I have had to refill their water bottle 3 times in 6 hours...Lila is trying to keep nourished I guess. They are all eating well, except it seems like they have never had a fruit or veggie in their lives, as I put a cut up grape, baby carrot stick and an apple slice in with them and all remained untouched.

and that is an Alfalfa log in with them, my mom decided to buy them one so the little ones can munch on it.

Oh my goodness, they are so adorable! Lila looks like a sheep, and I mean that in the nicest way possible :P

Good on you for saving them, you should be very proud. The babies do look about three weeks old. They grow SO quickly. Better find out sexes soon - don't need mum AND a female baby pregnant again (if there's one male and one female).

Hopefully Lila is not pregnant again, but if she's been in with a boar she probably is :( Good luck with the pregnancy, assuming it goes ahead.

Hope all goes well! x

she does look like a sheep! :)) she's a sweetie, though! She isn't shy one bit and gladly comes up to you in the cage.

Thanks! I am going to try and sex them tomorrow and try an get a good look, maybe take pics (I sound like a perv :)) ).

If there is a male, when do I need to separate assuming they're 3 weeks? She is already trying to wean them, or I guess she is, she keeps chattering at them when they try to nurse and moves away like she doesn't want them to try.

They're beautiful. Going by the size / weights they could be a good 2- 3 weeks so best to get them sexed. If there's any rumbling / humping behaviour I remove baby boars at that point, or 3 weeks - whichever comes first. If you post some pics we may be able to help with the sexing.

No problem. :) They just need time to get used to being treated nicely. :)

aw what little lovelies, good on you for rescuing them x

Well done to your for rescuing and I hope it all goes very well from here on. The pictures are lovely and I'm really glad your other piggie is enjoying them too!

Well done - mummy looks like she can do with all the tlc she WILL get now thanks to you and your mum!

They are so lovely; good luck with the sexing! Here's a useful set of pics on this link: http://www.coldal.org/guineapigs.html (scroll down to "gender?")

Keep us posted when they are cleaned up and settled, please! All my best for them! And good luck to Pola as well!

They look very happy. Must be like going from a dodgy boarding house to a 5 star hotel for them :))

Thanks everyone!

I will definitely figure out what sex they are today, and will take pics and post them to double check with you all... one thing I don't want to get wrong!

When I woke up I peeked my head in to check on them and they're all asleep under the cuddle cup :))

It's supposed to be a gorgeous day today so I may take them outside and play in the yard....so expect more pics! :)) :p and then Lila has got to get a bath today, I'm sure she will feel much better after it.

Looking forward to seeing poor mummy scrubbed up and the youngster gamboling around!

Well done for saving them, looks like they are very pampered. They were very lucky that you past by the pet shop, hope they do really well.

Shotzie (the little white one) is a boar.
Poppy (the little black one) is a sow.

So when do I need to separate the little fella? He is the whiniest one, of course :)) :p

My Mom wants to know what the best thing to bathe Lila in is? She wants to know specifically about Ivory Liquid soap.

Have you seen Shotzie mounting or rumbling around the other two yet? Its difficult to know when to separate as you don't know how old they are but if boys are particularly feisty they can get mum/ sisters pregnant at 3 weeks, otherwise 4 is the normal time to separate. Judging by the size and pictures he will need to come out soon...

I don't know about Ivory liquid soap but I bathe mine in a baby shampoo...

No Shotzie hasn't been trying to mount the ladies. I have been monitoring his behavior very closely. He just popcorns a lot, and like I said, he whines a lot, especially when Mommy is out of sight.

Weighed them again today and Shotzie is up to 274g, Poppy is up to 224g, and Lila is up to 632g (if that helps).

We finally found some unscented baby soap and washed her with that. As you can see in the pics, that is her coloring, I guess, I made sure and scrubbed her bottom to get any dirt off. And Lila is VERY round, I'm about 75% sure she is carrying more babies. She handled the bath well, she struggled for a few minutes and then relaxed and loved the cuddling afterwords!

More pics!
(I do realize my lawn needs to be mowed desperately!)

^Take a look at behind her ear.....should I be concerned about the hair loss? I am seriously considering taking her to the vet tomorrow to get her checked out.
