What is he like as a pig? What's his personality?
When Dave lost his cagemate (both as dominant as each other), he pined for him so needed a new friend as soon as possible. We got him a baby and he took to him straightaway, taking on the father role. They are both now fully grown and have the odd chase now and again, but live together fine.
Polo was a new friend for one of our piggies and arrived here as a baby. Sadly his friend died soon after he arrived, so he was left on his own. He was 4-5 months old when we needed to get him a new friend, but he is such a laid back pig that we decided not to wait and see but got him a baby friend there and then. His new friend now rules the roost, but again, they get on fine.
Pepper and Kingston were two single boys. Pepper's age is unknown (I got him from a hole of a petshop as I couldn't leave him there) but I'd guess at about 18 months old now and Kingston is currently about 9 months old. They are now together in the big enclosure after testing the water by putting them outside together on grass. Pepper is definitely the alpha pig and gets a bit stroppy at times, but nothing malicious so far.
I would try to get a friend for your piggy and see how they get on rather than keeping them separate at first. (The separation idea is only there as an emergency measure should they not get on!). As I said, a lot depends on personality with pigs, but there is no lengthy bonding process. With all of mine, I have just put them together to see how they get on, whilst trying to match personalities with potential partners. Also, contrary to popular belief, if adding a baby pig to an existing one, I leave the existing pig's environment as it is rather than scrubbing it clean of all smells - I've found this helps the baby know who is boss...until they've found their feet!
