I am making a C and C cage for Eddie and Smores, I am wanting to build one on top for the girls I am getting. But I am afraid it will be weak in the middle because nothing is supporting it because I don't want anything random in the middle of the boys pen. Will it be sturdy enough? What can I do to make it as sturdy as it needs to be an not cut back the boys cage space?

I am thinking about doing a cage like this, but slightly different.

Cage idea 7.webp

I made that cage minus the storage area underneath. The middle did sag slightly but i added cable ties to make sure it couldn't collapse.

I had a lone female in the top cage. She was a big girl, 1.3kg and it was fine for her but I'm not sure I would want a couple of large piggies popcorning and zooming around up there!

Good weight for piggie. You do need a firm bottom for the piggies. some wood or large plastic sheeting. Zooming piggies will test it. x

You can use wood support like this. Curtain rods will work too.

Make sure to secure all the connections with zip/cable ties. The ties you use much be the thick ones (supports 75 lbs. / 34 kg. tensile strength). Don't use the 4 inch ones.

Awesome! Thank you! :) I will definitely do that! Thanks for all the suggestions y'all, if I hadn't asked my cage might have been unsturdy. :D

I’m also in the process of planning and building a 2x5 double tier cage and it’s really interesting see everybody’s ideas as I’m worried too about the stability of the top level. I definitely think I’ll use some wooden supports though.

That is such a great idea, does not interfere with their living space at all yet still provides a stable upper floor thanks to “ceiling beams!”
