It was a sad time in Tees Valley Guinea Pig Rescue on Friday. Pixie had been for an op to remove a bladder stone in the morning. I picked him up early afternoon after what appeared to be a successful op. He was a bit groggy but gave him a heat pad while he was recovering from the anaestetic. I checked him every hour but when I went in at 5pm he had passed away.
My immediate concern then was that his life long partner Dixie was on his own for the first time in his 3 years. I gave gave him a cuddle & laptime, as much fo me as for him. I then contacted an owner who's piggy had given birth just 4 weeks ago & had one solo boy who had been removed from his mum the previous Saturday. I arranged that he would come to the rescue the next day. In the meantime Dixie didn't seem to be too affected by his friend's death & ate all his evening veggies up.
The boy arrived at 4.30 yesterday & by 5pm they were both in our bonding run. They got on really well though Dixie like a lot of male piggies was trying to hump the boy. As the boy was only just over 300g he was just walking out from under Dixie. As Dixie wasn't the most active of piggies prior to this, he was pretty tired with all the chasing around after & 15 minutes or so they both sttled down to eating some fresh cut grass I'd put in the run for them. After 2 to 3 hours I was quite happy that they were OK together & prepared evening veggies for all the piggies & put them both in a freshly cleaned out hutch with a bowl of veggies. They've been together over night & there have been no issues so I'm quite happy that they're OK now. After a lot of though I decided to call the new boy Pixie II in memory of Pixie who died, of course they'll just be know as Pixie & Dixie. I'm going to give them a couple of weeks to get adjusted to each other & then they will be ready for a 5 star forever home
xx
