Looking into neutering my nearly three and a half year old boy guinea pig!

Neutering in the hands of an experienced Vet is safe. As long as your piggy is fit & well there’s no reason to suspect that you won’t get a positive outcome.

Thanks for your reply :)

As many positive outcomes there are with neutering, unfortunately there are bad ones too. I lost my sweet boy, Nickel, to post-op neutering complications and he was only a year old. I just want you to know the risk and be sure you are making the right choice. I don't want you and your piggy to go through what Nickel (and I emotionally) had experienced.
If you want to go through with the neutering, my advice is to talk with the vet who will do the surgery; make sure they're experienced with guinea pig neutering and be sure your piggy is healthy x

If you can I would try to use one of the vets recommend on this site. They are all cavy savvy and you are far more likely to get a successful outcome.

Thank you for your advice! I'm so sorry you lost your piggy 😞 I am really worried about something going wrong x

I am so very sad to hear of your loss. I am sorry to pry.. I would like to understand more about possible complications, what were the complications that he had? Did you go to a specialist/experienced vet? I am sorry to bring this topic back up. I am wanting my two boys done and I want to know all I can!

@brumbydashy - it would be best to start your own new thread on this subject as the original post is two years old and you would get more answers on a new thread (not everybody looks back at these older threads).

Why are you wanting to have your two boys neutered? I only mention because neutering two boys won’t change their behaviour (of course unless you are planning to split them up and put them with a girl each, or planning ahead for the future when one sadly passes so you can bond the one left behind with girls)

There are risks for any surgeries, but in the hands of an experienced vet risks are reduced.
I’ll link in a guide for you to read Neutered / De-sexed Boars And Neutering Operations: Myths, Facts and Post-op Care

Thank you for your response! I am wanting my two boars neutered because of a falling out and I do not want to try bond them with more boars for them to be separated again. I’ve read that the best combination is a neutered boar paired with a female. I believe they will be happier with a girl each instead of more boys! I will make a post and have a read of that, thank you. :) :)

My Ted was neutered after loosing his brother, he was 5 years old. As long as you have an experienced vet and your piggie is healthy then it should be fine. But the other consideration is that there’s always a risk with any operation.

Thank you for you response, I appreciate your reply and I am sorry that you and Ted had to lose his brother. How did Ted get on after surgery? Did you pair a sow with him?

I can’t help with neutering specifically as I’ve never had boys, but last year one of my girls had two operations within four months at 4 years old (I felt quite bad about that time scale, but had to be done) And she bounced back both times. Both operations were lump removals, so almost kinda the same!

That’s awesome! She’s a trooper! :D Thank you for that insight. :)

Ted got on fine he has two ladies which he will be bonded with once he gets home. he is lodging at a guinea pig sanctuary for special needs at the moment because he has a dental problem so he can be near his vet which is 300 miles away from his home. lock down has made it very difficult to travel etc. Hopefully soon we will be able to pick him up and bring him home. here is Ginger, Ted and Posh the long haired lady on the sofa together sharing treats and all being very well behaved x77DFB2DC-BB0D-461A-A63F-02D8C98E31FE.jpeg

Aww Mr Ted, all the best for his teeth and how nice that he will have such a nice homecoming present! :D

It must be frustrating for you with things being this way, but it is amazing how above and beyond you have gone for Ted.

They are all so sweet and looking content! What a sweet mini heard! I love it! :)

Yes, thank you, they’ve only met on the sofa as Ted was waiting his 6 week Quarantine after his op then he stopped eating, and to cut a Very long story short ended up in Northampton at the sanctuary where Debbie has looked after him so well and he’s been able to visit his vet every two weeks in the hope we can get his teeth back on track to fewer appointments which are doable for us to bring him home and travel when he needs a conscious dental x

Nickel had gotten an infection after the surgery and sadly we found it too late. He was acting like normal so he must've been hiding it well. I followed my vet's instructions to keep the cage as clean as possible to avoid infections, but somewhere along the way he unfortunately got one. It was about a week or two after the surgery when I found a large swelling near his stitches and called the vet right away. From there, he sadly went downhill :(
As mentioned, my advice is definitely talk with the vet and be sure this is the right choice. If you go through with it, I am sending all the positive vibes to you and your boys, I hope all goes well x
