Some of you may have already seen this on my Facebook, but yesterday I came home to the biggest shock...Pumpkin, my rescue pig who I got 2 weeks ago, had given birth to two stillborn, premature pups. Poor little girl is only 14 weeks old herself.
She hasn't gained weight the past two weeks at all, I noticed she was a little rounded but didn't think anything of it as she does enjoy her food.
She came from a huge garden where around 40 pigs were left to roam free, and then the local animal charity rescued them. Unfortunately they specialise more in dogs and cats so they didn't have her under close pregnancy watch, but the bloke at the rescue said they had been monitoring her.
Does anybody know what could have caused her to have had the pups so early? They were about the size of my thumb, pink, with tiny paws and ears and no fur at all :(
She's doing ok and acting her normal self so I think she is feeling ok but she must have been terrified!

Aww, poor baby! Maybe her body just naturally miscarried if they were stillborn :( I hope the poor girly is ok!

OH my goodess! Poor little girl, the only thing i know that would bring on premature labour would be stress or parsley so i'm not really sure, there aren't anymore in her are there stuck or anything? I think it would be a good idea to take her to the vets for a check over, just make sure everything is ok and there aren't any underlying condition's. xx

i have no experience with preganant sows but seeing as they were born hairless and so tiny it is probable that nature took over and she spontaneously miscarried. Such a shame, i am sorry for your loss xx

OMG that poor little girlie :(
I'm soooooo glad she's with you love i know you'll get her the best attention XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

OMG, I remember you having Pumpkin recently :) but have no experience of pregnant sows.
Hope she is ok hun and would contact Suzy to ask about after care, she may require a quick vet check and a supplemented diet to recover even though the poor little sweetie miscarried :(
Please keep us updated and send lots of hugs x>>

Hiya Jaycee

Surprisingly most females react very little to a miscarriage - as long as it wasn't the result of tox. A vet check to ensure all the foetuses are passed would be a good idea at this stage. Keep handling to a minimum - pick up via cozy is best just til she physically recovers.

You can spoil her a bit more than ususal now - feed her up with good quality pellets and tasty veg, a bit of alfalfa for a week
replenish her calcium used for the babies.

A likely cause was the stress or possibly poor handling in the capture causing the pregnancy to fail. As she hadn't gained weight since you had her I would say the babies had perished then and her body rejected them as they were too developed to reabsorb, if they were not a nice pink colour this is the most likely.

If they were pink then I would say it was a spontenous miscarriage, possibly due to the stress but more likely to a problem with the pregnancy itself and it would have failed no matter what.

aww poor wee girl, she is just a baby herself. Hearing this makes me so sad at the irresponsible people around! We all hope she recovers quickly. xx

I am so sorry for your little baby!

Suzy has said it all about the possible causes for the miscarriage. Please spoil Pumpkin with some mineral and vitamin C rich herbs and some extra calcium to help her body to recover and replenish its reserves. Have her checked by a vet to make sure that she herself is OK.

Poor Pumpkin, hope she is ok x

Sorry to hear about Pumpkin.

I'm sure she'll come round just fine with a little extra tlc.:)

I would advise that you phone the rescue to let them know what has happened, for their records.

Unfortunately, these sows should never have been rehomed prior to completing their pregnancy watch - you are not the only one to have adopted a pregnant sow. There will be more heartache I'm afraid :(

I know well the environment these piggies have come from and I have no doubt that Pumpkins miscarriage is attributed to generations of inbreeding and very poor environment.

I hope she has a long and happy life with you. :)
