Hi,

This is a strange one.

My lovely Olivia is on antibiotics for a UTI but otherwise very well. Eating and poop ok. Very happy.

She has been seen by the vet in the last 4 weeks mouth ok.

In the last 3 weeks has been making a strange sucking/clicking noise and holding her head up .at least 4 times an hour for about 30 seconds. Sounds like ‘Skippy’ the bush Kangaroo for those that remember. It’s quite endearing and not associated with any pain noises. I thought it was something in her mouth or a broken tooth but all seems fine . No dribbling.

Has anyone seen similar? She never did this before, but now does it most of every day .

About 3 years old.

She is fine . Many thanks.

Eating very well. Normal poops. Just finished antibiotics. Drinks from bottle fine. Unlike her mate who won’t touch water from any receptacle !

Still making the strange noise. Associated with lifting the head up. Sounds a bit Dental but I’m not sure. The Vet says teeth ok.

I would have thought behavioural but only started doing it after 3 years .

I just thought somebody else might have seen it ?

I’ve moved this into the health and illness section as it is more likely to be seen by the health experts there

Hi

This is not normal behaviour. Has your vet checked carefully whether something could be stuck between some teeth at the back?

Hi,

Hopefully the right forum ?

My 3 year old sow has started to make an occasional sucking sound and lifting her head up . I have posted this elsewhere . She is eating very well 80% grass/hay.

No weight loss. Absolutely no distress. She does chew the bars at night . No dribbling.

I have just spent a fortune on full health checks for a recurring UTI and antibiotics. My Piggie expert had just left the Practice unfortunately.

I tried to look at her incisors and the top ones are starting to cross. No picture yet sorry. I’m guessing Dental but should I treat this as an emergency? Is there a Dental expert on the forum ?

Can it wait until a routine appointment? Maybe an unfair question but somebody might be able to advise.

I have merged your new post (made on an old thread of another member) with your original thread on this subject.
Please do keep any further posts on this issue to this one thread. It helps us have all the background in one place.

Please do have your piggy checked by the vet again - as Wiebke has said this isn’t normal.
As long as she is eating and currently maintaining her weight each day, it isn’t an emergency for today but do make a routine appointment for her. The receptionists will be able to advise how soon she needs to be seen.

Ok. That’s helpful.

I post on here for general advice . Obviously the forum can’t diagnose, but do incisors need Vet clipping in ALL pigs regularly or is there a home remedy like something to chew on rather than C&C bars ?

There are people that have looked after tens or hundreds of piggies with some view .

Since she is so happy I can’t afford to keep running up the vets apart from emergencies and routine checks. She was fully checked in January.

Incisors never need clipping.
Incisors are self sharpening and are kept in check by the correct action of the molars when they chew hay. If an owner notices a problems with the incisors, more often it is a reflection that there is a problem with the molars (they can start to chew unevenly at the back usually due to a pain issue with the molars). This always need vet care - there are no home remedies.
If there was to be a standalone issue with the incisors, affecting just them, it can be things like an abscess under an incisor.
The longer dental issues are left the harder they can be to treat.
We obviously cannot say whether your piggy actually has an issue though.

Saw the Vet yesterday .
Weight gain from 2 months ago.
Nothing found in mouth. No pain elsewhere.

The vet asked me to video it .

I’m wondering if it’s a form of teeth chattering but I’m not sure ? Started abruptly 6 weeks ago . She is never stressed or hungry when she does it . Doesn’t seem to be in pain.

Certainly odd. Lifts the head up and makes a sucking sound for up to 10mins. Maybe teeth involved ?

It’s good her weight is up but do make sure you are weighing her yourself at home every week so you can keep a closer eye.

Something stuck in the teeth, as Wiebke suggested, would be something to look for - she would likely need to be sedated so instruments could be used for a proper check.

If you can video, upload to YouTube and then post a link to it here then it may help us to advise as well

Very sad outcome…

I woke up this morning to blood everywhere. The problem was the bladder so I should have taken more notice of the behaviour. She did have scans and x rays only 3 weeks ago . Feel absolutely terrible .

She was euthanised this morning. I think odd behaviour should be more recognised.

Thanks for the helpful posts…

Thanks for reaction.

I have owned 8 pigs but she was special. Sat with me for hours watching films on channel 82. Always put the head straight down and one leg out.

I won’t start a rainbow thread but the behaviour should be noted .

I am so sorry for your loss 💔.

Please don't blame yourself, you were back and forth to the Vet, you did all you could.

Rest in peace Olivia 🌿
