Hi all

My lovely George has a sudden bald patch on his back? Skin doesn’t look irritated, and his fur is on the fleece in his cage, like it’s come out in clumps? He’s not been scratching, and is eating/drinking/pooping fine. Any ideas? I’ve booked him a vet appointment for tomorrow, just looking for advice! Thanks

Good luck at the vets. Hopefully it’s something easily treated like mites or lice.

So my vet is stumped. He is not convinced it’s mites, did a skin scrape and couldn’t see anything, and he suspects barbering as the hairs are broken mid shaft and there’s no redness or scabbing etc. so we are treating for mites just in case, with ivermectin, see how that goes. I’m going to do a deep clean of their room, proper scrub it with f10 and replacing all fleece/toys/hides etc. my problem is, no one has stock of ivermectin! I’ve enough for George and Jeremy who have lost hair, but I can’t get any for the rest of the herd till Thursday 😩 I can’t treat just two, I’d have to do the whole herd, will I be ok to wait till Thursday?

I’m wondering if he is self barbering whether there may be an internal pain issue in that area?

Yes ivermectin is very hard to come by. I had a problem in February and my vet just told me to use Beaphar spot on. It was my only option. I wasn’t happy using a lower dose product. But it did seem to work. But last month they had lice again. Vets had no ivermectin and pet shops didn’t have any Beaphar. So I mentioned to my vet about using kitten stronghold. This has selamectin in it. They researched it and agreed it can be used. Your vet will have to work out the dosage. They pre filled syringes (no needle) for me to use 4 weeks later for the 2nd dose. Hope that helps if they can’t get any more ivermectin.

That is our next option, we thought we would rule out the easily treatable stuff first.

I’ve ordered two lots of ivermectin now, hopefully one will turn up tomorrow!
