about a month ago my 2 piggies were in their run in the garden, I spotted one of them lying down panting wouldnt move, he was squeeling and then lying still, put him in his hutch and he lay the same on his side, occasionally lifting his head and squeeling in pain, i sat stroking him and he let out 3 agonising squeels and died, 1 1/2 hours earlier he was 100 %, he was 2 years old. we suspected poisoning? the only explanation i could come up with was a foxglove about 4 yards away? or the children had picked something and put in for them to eat? the other guinea pig went to the vet and recieved charcoal and seemed fine a few hours later. we didnt want him to live alone so we bought a baby to keep him company about 2 weeks ago. they went out in the run today and exactly the same happened. We dug up and removed the foxglove a month ago so we know it isnt that, they were enclosed on the lawn, both were running around as usual half an hour later the adult guinea was lying still panting, I lifted him and jumped straight in the car and he died in my arms, again letting out 2 loud squeels and dying. 2 healthy pigs died within an hour, a month apart and both after going out on the grass? what on earth could it be?? They were def both poisoned somehow, we do not use weedkillers or any pesticides as I have a free range chicken and young children. The grass had been mown the day before on both occasions this is all i can think of? I have 3 other pigs and dont want to keep them now in case they get poisoned too and worried about my kiddies if there is something in the garden that can kill apig in an hour?? any advice please, they were adorable family pets .x

I'm very sorry. Is it possible that maybe another plant is poisoning them? One of my piggies died from eating a plant that was indoors. He knocked it down and ate it. He got very ill but we got him to the vets in time and he survived. Sadly he somehow knocked it down again and ate the plant. This time he died from it. =(

Maybe put them in a different area on the grass or just pick grass for them in the future. Or some people grow a glass pot for their piggies and give them it from that. =)

Could it be possible that they got stung or bit by a bee or another insect? I know bee stings can be fatal. Sorry I don't have much advice or insight, but I am sorry for your losses, and I hope you get to the bottom of it!

Sorry to hear about your loss:(

I can't think what it could be, perhaps it is a weed that when mown exposes a part of that plant that is poisonous. Do you use a petrol mower if so is it leaking petrol?

I know old grass can be hazadous if it starts rotting but freshly mowed should be okay.

Other than that I can't think what could cause it.

It must be linked to the freshly cut grass?

Maybe you cut something, foxglove or whatever & it was still on the blades & has perhaps come off on that area of grass?

How awful I'm sorry to hear that! Xx
