My little girl died yesterday very very suddenly. She wasn't even a year she was only 9 months old she was supposed to have her vet check up next months along with having her vaccine. We took her to Vets 4 Pets and they said that they did a full check of her. We took her there because we bought her from Pets at home she had ring worm 6 days after we got her and if we went there it was free and she went for her check over there and said she was fine and had her vaccine there. Came home yesterday to be told that she had died at 10:30 and was told 7 hour later she was fitting in her cage so my grandma took her to Caldervet as an Emergancys case. She had ear mites from her birth that has killed her the incompetency and ignorants of Pets at home and Vets for pets

I am ever so sorry! Poor girl! You are welcome to post a tribute to Velma in our Rainbow Bridge section.
Sadly I cannot see your picture. If uploading from your i-phone doesn't work (not all are compatible with the forum software) then you can always copy/paste a picture into your post that has been uploaded elsewhere.

Guinea pigs don't need vaccines, so what was her injection supposed to be? Sadly, the quality of pet shop branches and no-frills services vets can vary quite a lot depending on what areas the treating vet has specialised (or not) in. It is so sad that your little girl had to pay the price with her life. :(

We have got a recommended UK vet locator on the top bar, as well as a recommended rescue locator; all listed rescues have a mandatory quarantine and pregnancy watch for incoming guinea pigs, and only put up healthy and carefully bonded guinea pigs up for adoption. Most also offer a bonding service at the rescue for bereaved guinea pigs.

If Velma has a companion, here is what you can do for her: Looking After A Bereaved Guinea Pig

I'm so sorry for your loss. ((HUGS)) to you. I've honestly never heard of a guinea pig being given vaccinations before. From what you've said about mites, I'm wondering if it was actually an injected mite treatment. I lost a pig a few years back who might have been saved with more competent vet care, and even though it's impossible to know what the better outcome could have been, I know it's hard not to feel awful when you feel that improper vet care could have contributed. I wish there was more I could say... ((HUGS)) again.

Sorry for your loss :( I too have lost 3 guinea's due to vet care or the lack of it, one of them was at the vets you mentioned @Velma poppy pig ... three guinea's in just over a year... one was only a few weeks ago.

Sorry for your loss. She looked like a real trendsetter with that hairstyle!

I was at Just for Pets in Northampton earlier and saw a family selecting a guinea pig for their kids. The staff mentioned that they put them in quarantine for about a week to see if they have anything before giving them away. I guess that since piggies do well in hiding any issues until they are serious very well it's not much help.

I would highly recommend getting piggies from a rescue where you know they have been looked after and checked by people who are passionate and caring about pets rather than just to make a quick buck.

Just for Pets were advertising instore that they were looking for guinea pig and budgie breeders in the area - obviously to get a running stock of pigs to sell to any random person without any vetting. Sad...but this is the reality of the pet economy.
