I feel devastated...my sweet guinea Smasher died suddenly an hour ago.She had broken her bottom 2 teeth, but they were growing back and she had started eating by herself.I even posted on here that she had improved !

Yesteraday I thought she looked a bit " off " and dull eyed.I took her back to the vets who thought it wasn't too serious but may be developing a uri as her breathing was a little fast...she prescribed baytril and more critical care, which I have been giving Smasher along with 3 doses of her antibiotics.Today she didn't eat much by hand and I was a bit worried, but thought she was ok.I took her into my bed with my children to cuddle her and feed etc and she was really weak, falling over so I wrapped her in a warm towel and after a couple of gasps she died in my son's arms....he is distraught .What could have caused her to die so suddenly ? Is it connected to a previous guinea who died in December of a possible uri ? Are my other guineas likely to become unwell?8...

oh god, I'm so sorry, that sounds awful, how traumatic, rip Smasher.

I dont know the answer sorry, just wanted to pass on my regards, hope you all are ok xx

((HUGS))- I'm so sorry! I don't know what could have been the cause, but sometimes little animals can go very quickly. I'm so sorry for your loss.. RIP little Smasher!

So sorry to hear about Smasher. You did absolutely everything you could for her over the past week or so. She was very lucky to have you caring for her.

Lots of love. RIP Smasher

Thank you everyone...just in from preparing a plot in our memorial garden..I can't believe I've lost another relatively young guinea so soon after Sparkle who died in December.

Sportbilly, you seem very knowledgable...can guinea pigs deteriorate so quickly ? She was on antibiotics and critical care...I can't believe they didn't help.Do you think she could have reacted to the baytril? The vet ( who seemed to know her stuff) didn't think she was unwell on Tuesday although I knew she was " off " I feel bad for her, but as I told my son she lived indoors in the childrens playroom and so had lots of cuddles and interaction and died warm and in someones arms....and thats all we could ask for and all we want , at the end.:(

BIG HUG

I am sorry - she sounds like she could have been developing a heart problem, and yes, they can go that quickly even with the best of care. I lost a piggy last summer within 24 hours of showing the first symptoms of a strained heart. Many members have woken up or come home to finding a perfectly healthy piggy in its forever sleep.

It is always such a shock. You did all you could do, so please don't blame yourself!

Thanks Wiebke, yes it is a shock and you just hope they didn't suffer.I remember years ago with my first piggies finding them in their hutch outside, and it has helped that she was indoors with us and hopefully as comfortable and secure as she could be.

I will just miss her, most people don't understand the bond because they are small, I suppose but she had such a sparky personality, but also really enjoyed being close and having cuddles.

i lost a 3 year old last summer, he went in a day and was struggling so hard to breathe, it came from nowhere, i was traumatised then i lost another same age about a month later to stones.

:(

I've lost 5 in one year....3 now to possible uri which is why I'm worried there could be a reason why...Millie, Sparkle and now Smasher.

I lost Minty too, but she was nearly 6 and just went in her sleep. My other was a 3 month baby,Jessie, who I bought from PAh and whom never put on weight and had to be constantly hand fed....she was pts and I was devastated over her...we had a real bond because I had to care constantly for her...she cried all the time unless she was held by me.I was heartbroken when she died.
