Today I found my guinea pig Sage’s eye like this. It’s red, kind of liquidy, and she doesn’t seem to respond to movement on that side. As far as I can tell, there was no fight between her and her two cage mates, and there is nothing in the cage that would injure her. I do have a boar, Dumbo, with an eye that went blind a year and a half ago, and they look like similar cases. I never learned what happened to Dumbo’s eye, because I was on vacation when it happened. He operates just fine, and it doesn’t seem to bother him. It may be hay poke, but it seems a bit unlikely that they both have the same problem. Anyways, does anyone know what this might be? I have no access to veterinarians, so if there are any at-home treatments it would be appreciated. Thank you in advance!

I'm afraid we cannot suggest home treatments or know what might be wrong - by law only a vet can diagnose and treat after a hands on assessment; and home treatments tend to make matters worse because you don’t know what you are treating.

We can only suggest first aid as per the guide below to tide an owner over for a few hours until vet care can be sought. This will not resolve any major medical issue though. This looks like an injury and looks like that may be blood in her eye. Any trauma or injury (including hay poke) is considered an emergency and requires urgent vet care.

I hope your piggy is ok
