Sudden loss

Is it to cold for my guinea pig to be out in there run when it’s 12 degrees and sunny
You must be able to stand barefoot where her run would be for 5 minutes without your feet getting cold. If your feet get cold, it's still too cold for the guineas is the recommendation on this forum.

I didn't know that when I still had guineas and would sometimes put them out in the autumn sunshine with their fleece cozies and sleeping bags etc. in the run, so they could sit in or on that and eat, and enjoy the sniffs and fresh air, but I wouldn't have them outside too long in that weather. Maybe just an hour or so.

She was just sitting in the plastic box I lifted her into the house in looking into empty space

Teeth chattering is a sign of displeasure so she was not happy about something that had happened

I don’t think any branch of pets at home in Aberdeen would see a single guinea pig they say there priority is animal welfare

Would they sell you one if you said it was for another younger sow? 💕

I don’t think so the say they only sell them in pairs as guinea pigs are social herd animals

Would your vet write a confirmation that you already have a guinea pig, a bereaved one looking for a new companion? I ask about your vet because he/she could attest to your having one and Pets at Home would hopefully believe the vet.

Maybe she felt unsafe and would have preferred not to be lifted at that moment? Or maybe she would have preferred a covering over the plastic box, like an old towel, if there was no cover. I can't know because I don't know whether there was a cover or not, but just a thought/suggestion. There would have been some reason for her to chatter her teeth, and it's good to try and figure out what a particular guinea has a problem with in certain situations.

I’m unfortunately with vets 4 pets within pets at home so don’t think there’s a chance

I actually think Mrs tiggy winkle’s point about speaking to the vet still stands.
As they know piggies are herd animals then the vet would hopefully be able to have they chat with the staff about how not allowing you to buy one is now meaning you have a single and lonely older piggy with little chance of getting a new friend without you being able to buy one.
The issue will be if they already have even numbers of piggies in the shop. If they have an odd number then there should be no problem with them selling you one

This is the response I got when I spoke to there customer service via the pets at home app :

Hi Ruth,
I’m sorry our chat timed out just as your message came through—I understand how frustrating that can be.

I’m also sorry to hear about your recent experience with our Aberdeen store. Guinea pigs are sold in pairs because they are highly social herd animals, so it’s unusual for one to be sold individually unless there are specific circumstances. For example, if a single guinea pig has been surrendered to our adoption centre and hasn’t previously bonded with another, it may be rehomed on its own.

If the store declined to sell a single guinea pig, it’s likely because the animal was already bonded with a companion.

I appreciate this may be disappointing, but our top priority is animal welfare, and we wouldn’t want to place an animal in a situation that could cause stress.

If you need any further help or have any further questions, please let us know.

Many thanks,
Manon

Right, so they were all already in pairs in separate enclosures in the shop for sale. (Rather than multiple sows all just in one pen). Then that is fair enough that they won’t sell you just one

You will just have to keep trying to find one.
As it says, perhaps one will come into their adoption centre

No there are mutiple sows in store in a pen altogether

They said if they declined to sell you a single then it was because they were already in bonded pairs. The fact they were all in a pen together means they are not in bonded pairs; they would be in a herd and people are just picking two they like the look of to take home with little to no regard for what the bonds actually are or would be.

Don’t suppose you counted them to find out whether they was an odd or even number of piggies in the pen. If there was an odd number then I don’t see why they can’t sell a single to go with a bereaved piggy.

To be honest though there doesn’t sound to be a huge amount you can do about it if they are going to refuse to sell you one

I have been looking on sites like gumtree but the just seem to have baby boars for sale at the moment
Keep watching those sites! A singleton sow may turn up. Sometimes those who advertise there are unscrupulous backyard breeders, who I wouldn't suggest supporting, but others are genuine owners trying to rehome a Pig or two.

They are all in a pen together at pets at home . People just chose the pair they like

No piggies and buns was saying that pets at home probably refuse to sell u a single guinea pig cause there already bonded in pairs

I was explaining to her that there not all the same sex are in a pen together and customers that visit the store just pick out a pair that they like the look off

That's pretty annoying then. Cuz no reason not to sell to you.
Grr.
