posting this to hopefully get some thoughts or advice before the vets opens.

6 year old male guinea pig noticed he was a bit puffy around 3am. we give them arthrocam every now and then to help them in their old age. he wouldn't take it which is very unusual, picked him up and noticed he was drooling excessively.

his breathing was laboured too and the fluid was building up and he was wretching and spitting it up, quite large amounts.

I was worried he'd trapped a bit of hay in his mouth, every time I lifted his head to try and see in his mouth he would struggle to breathe with all the saliva.

took him to the emergency vets. he goes between being fine, hunched over and lethargic. still wants to eat but can't manage it. she gave him pain killers and something for gut stasis. she also consulted their exotics branch who said it's most likely dental issues.

he had x-rays fairly recently, though not dental and they never mentioned teeth issues they looked in his mouth as well though ofc that's not exactly easy in a guinea pig. our other boy had some mild occlusion to keep an eye on but this chap has been eating like a champ up until now!

waiting for our normal exotics vet to open so we can call but in the meantime has anyone experienced such a sudden onset?

I'm struggling with syringe feeding because he has so much fluid I'm worried he's going to aspirate!

he's currently very high on drugs and breathing very croakily 😞

I’m sorry to hear that.
It would be surprising for such a sudden decline and inability to swallow to be purely down to dental but of course we are not vets.

Let us know what the vet says. I hope he is ok

I had a piggie who had dental issues who then started drooling, couldn't eat and lost weight. Initially I assumed it was more overgrown teeth, but then I took him to the Cat and Rabbit clinic. Kim said she could just see in his mouth marks that looked like the start of oral thrush, so he was prescribed Itrafungol and started getting better almost immediately. https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/threads/wet-chin.204603/
He didn't have laboured breathing though.

I hope you were/are able to see your usual vet. Sending healing vibes 💓
