Sudden Paralysis in Back Legs

My boy was paralyzed for a week after an ear infection and I wiped his legs and bottom twice daily to prevent urine scald. He started walking again after antibiotics.
That’s interesting. I’m so glad your boy recovered. I’m giving mine the medication and hoping they pull through. Was your boy eating much whilst on the meds?

The critical care/pellet mush is the fibre intake - critical care is better than pellet mush as it has a higher fibre content but pellets are the emergency alternative.

The antibiotic can affect their appetite but you must not stop it unless the vet tells you to do so. It could be a greater risk to leave a potential bacteria untreated.

A probiotic would be recommended while on an antibiotic (provided you are not feeding an already fortified recovery feed). It is not a medication so you can get it from a pet shop or from Amazon.

They may need a gut stimulant medication prescribed but that is something to ask the vet.

Good that your vet has given you panacur as well as recovery fare. It is the best medication against e.cuniculi and other non-bacterial bugs. It's not an antibiotic.

I am keeping my fingers firmly crossed!
At the same time I’m looking into the license side of things regarding the boarder that my piggies stayed at. It’s not a coincidence that 5 days after they arrived, one of my boys died and 2 are paralysed. I have since heard about a family whose rabbit was riddled with lice after staying there, even though the rabbit was lice free on arrival. The boarder has a lot of positive feedback however I’ve been told by a vet that there are issues with hygiene there, as they have lots of different animals boarding (rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, tortoises, birds etc). So I’m going to investigate via Trading Standards. If this boarder was to blame then she has destroyed my piggies’ lives.

He ended up losing 100 grams and I syringe fed him. He would eat little bits if it was in front of him.

After a while he would eat critical care in a dish.

He was on antibiotics but he relapsed a month later so has to have antibiotics and additional two and a half months.

He has been fine for nine months.

Thank you for this! They are having the recovery feed but Shaun isn’t taking much. Peanut is still eating some lettuce and cucumber. I’ll keep on with the antibiotics as well as the Panacur and ask the vet about the gut stimulant 🙏

Thank you! That’s great news and gives me hope ✨✨

Their daily weight checks are your guide here - keep going with as (aiming for 40-60ml per day) as much syringe feed as you can

Definitely keep up with all the meds and stay in touch with your vet.

Fingers firmly crossed for them

They’re definitely not getting 40-60ml per day. As I’m at work I can’t do the syringe feeding during the day. Shaun is being much more resistant to being fed than Peanut is.

I’m just not sure whether to stop the antibiotic as it may be affecting their appetite. Maybe I should give it a few more days as it’s only been 3 full days of the antibiotics. I’m desperately hoping they recover 😢🙏

Hi

I am very sorry, but this is something you need to sort out with your treating vet. Is the vet aware that they are on the antibiotic? Normally it is recommended to finish a course unless there are major reasons against but you should only stop a course with the consent of the treating vet.

PS: Panacur is NOT an antibiotic but a different class of medication.

Once you have a diagnosis and an outcome, then you can certainly complain to the local council but it depends on the contract you have signed.

The 2nd vet advised to continue with the antibiotics. They were prescribed by the 1st vet who gave me 2 types of antibiotic- the 2nd vet I saw thought that this was unnecessary and only Baytril was needed. He also prescribed the Panacur and seemed much more comfortable with treating piggies.

I don’t know if I’ll even get a diagnosis. At the moment I’m just waiting to see what happens with both types of medication. The vet asked me to check in with him towards the end of this week. All I want is to save my babies 😢

I will go after her with everything I have. This woman clearly is culpable and is putting other animals in danger. She’s broken my heart and I won’t let her get away with it.

Stay strong you are doing an amazing job 💐
This is how the boys are all day, just hiding in their house except when I’m holding them. You can see their little legs just sticking out. Their weight has dropped from 1.32kg to 1.25kg for Shaun; Peanut has dropped from 1.3kg to 1.2kg. That’s in 2 days.

Are they taking their meds, water and critical care still? I know Shaun has been reluctant x

They are still taking their meds. Shaun isn’t eating much and is struggling with the critical care. Peanut can eat solid food. He’s been munching on cucumber. Shaun tries but it’s like he can’t bite properly. I don’t know why.

My heart is honestly breaking for you all 💔
I just don’t think they’ll make it and I have to think about letting them go. If I want to find out what made them ill and prove it was the boarder’s fault, then I will need to have a post mortem done which will be about £250. It’s just too much. I am in such a state about it 💔💔xx

When are you getting back in touch with your vet Friday? X
I’m going to phone them tomorrow with an update. I’ll ask for his advice then. I just know that piggies can’t last long without sufficient nutrition. They must be so miserable and it’s not fair to do this to them 💔💔 xx

You don’t need a licence if offering guinea pig boarding in the UK. However, she should hold pet business insurance including public liability cover! I hope you can get to the bottom of what happened xx

Thank you 🙏. I was wondering that. I did ask her about business insurance but she avoided answering the question. I hope I can get some kind of justice for my boys 😔. Shaun has a really sore and raw bottom so I’ve been bathing it tonight. He seems so unhappy and isn’t taking much food either. Peanut is eating better and seems much brighter, though he’s still paralysed too. I just don’t know what to do 😢😢xx

Has there been any sign of movement at all? 😥
