Sudden Paralysis in Back Legs

Hi, my Waffle had complete paralysis last year. If you had seen him, you would never have expected him to recover he was so very ill. Over the course of a couple of months he got well again, slowly and in stages. I never ever imagined he would get full movement and strength back, but after a few months he was even back to standing up on his hind legs just like he used to. It was like a miracle to me....I just wanted to let you know this, in the hope that it gives you some comfort to stay calm and positive.
Incidentally, I took him to 2 different vets who were supposedly Guinea Pig specialists. And both had no idea what was wrong and just gave him injection vitamin boosts and Metacam. All that the visits did to my mind was cause discomfort and stress to Waffle, especially as I was very reluctant to have him injected, but when they are so poorly we panic and don't listen to our instincts.
Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that it can look incredibly lethal when they are that ill, but they can make an excellent recovery from paralysis.
(I worked out for myself that Waffle had consumed a Laurel berry that had fallen from the Laurel bushes onto the grass in his run, they are extremely bad for Piggies and will cause Toxicity which leads to the illness & paralysis, I didn't know this beforehand)
Very best wishes to you and your dear Piggies. I'm so sorry that you're having such a distressing time and I send good karma to you.

What a beautiful post 🙏💕

Hi how are you all today?
That photo is precious 💕
I’m sorry I missed your message. My beloved fuzzy boy Shaun passed away earlier this morning. I am in pieces. Today I have an appointment at the pet crematorium for Biscuit, but now I don’t know whether I should pay for a post mortem for Shauny 💔💔💔

Thank you for your lovely words and I’m so happy that Waffle recovered. Sadly I lost my boy Shaun this morning. He was barely eating and struggled with the syringe feeding. He couldn’t manage to eat any hay or any veggies. I think his little body just gave up despite all I tried to do to save him. My heart is broken but all I can do is try to keep going and save Peanut 💔💔💔

This is totally heartbreaking! My heart goes out to you. Can you get Shaun’s body to a vet ASAP? For post-mortem they need the body as soon as possible after death.

Sending hugs x
I’ll phone the vet this morning after taking Biscuit to the pet crematorium. The vet doesn’t do post mortems. It’s very pricey here; around £250. I’m just not sure what to do but I’m struggling to cope right now. I need to have Shaun individually cremated too as he deserves to have a dignified journey to his new life x

HUGE HUGS

I cannot say how sorry I am that Shaun has lost his battle. It is a credit to your care and efforts that he has been able to hang in there for so long.

If sheer love could have won the battle, you'd have won it hands down.

PS: I know that a post mortem is very expensive but you will be in a much better position if you know what has killed your piggies.

I know you must be completely overwhelmed but is there anyone who can contact the boarder for you surely they should bee trying to help you in some way 🙏

The boarder will unfortunately be only interested in covering their own back, seeing that it is likely not the first incident. :(

How much can they tell from a PM? Will it give definite answer? I understand that the boarder in no way meant this to happen but surely she should have some insurance for things like this? 😔

It's disgusting if they aren't looking after people's precious guineas properly something surely can be done. I know that @Julezfm39 is going through this heartbreak and can't be expected to do everything especially with Peanut still battling but it's just wrong 😥

I don’t think she has insurance. I met her today and collected my piggy who passed away a week ago as he was being kept in cold storage. I have asked her to contribute significantly to my crematorium and vet costs which she seemingly agreed to. I’m not going to have a PM as it won’t necessarily give me an answer. I would rather put the money towards seeing a highly specialist piggy vet 😔 Shaun is gone and my heart is broken with this 💔💔

You’ve been so supportive, thank you 💕💕 My vet is going to keep Shaun in cold storage until I take him to be cremated. The boarder hasn’t admitted guilt (why would she) but hasn’t said she’s NOT guilty either. I have sobbed and sobbed today over the loss of Biscuit and Shaun. I’ll have to do everything I can to keep Peanut strong and pray he recovers xx

I even blame myself for putting my babies there. I left them thinking they would be happy and safe, and now too are dead and one is left partially paralysed 😢😢😢

No I have no words that will help you but I am sending you the biggest hug even I'm in tears it is just heartbreaking.
Shaun is with Biscuit now and if they can they will help Peanut through 😥

Thank you so much 💕💕 I’m sorry it’s upset you too, it’s just heartbreaking 💔. Now Peanut is alone and he looks so lost. I just pray he can pull through with Biscuit and Shaun giving him the strength 💛💛💛💛xx

Thank you 🙏 I’m considering everything over the weekend. My vet is kindly going to keep Shaun in cold storage at no charge, so I can just focus on Peanut whilst I think things through.

Just knowing I could give Shaun so much love in this past week as I tried to save him, gives me some comfort 💕

Please don't apologise, how is Peanut? I assume your girl is still well 💐

There is nothing wrong with you as an owner or where your heart sits. If love only could save lives, you have enough to run a whole Ark. You have not failed Shaun; it was just not to be because he was too badly affected to eat and keep up his fighting strength.
