Sudden Paralysis in Back Legs

BIG HUGS

It is all a bit too raw for you right now. Only time will heal. I would recommend that you stay away from those threads until they don't majorly upset you anymore. I do if a loss of mine is still too raw and wait until I am able to cope with it. The mod team understands and we give each other time and space to recover with our own tribulations and tragedies.

Look after yourself, your family and your remaining piggies first and foremost. You are a lovely lady with a huge heart but you need to give the glue time to hold the broken bits together.

Perfectly said, thank you ❤️ My son who’s 17 came downstairs and asked me why I was sitting on the dining chair crying 😢😢. It’s just too much right now ❤️‍🩹

Hope the gabapentin helps! If he's still eating he's still enjoying life I say x
It’s worth trying! After all, nothing is going to make it worse at this point. Yes, Peanut is still eating well! I help clear any extra poop build-up about 3-4 times a day but he’s pooping fine too. He’s not suffering with urine scald or a sore bottom. So I’m just hoping that somehow he can get through this ❤️‍🩹xx

Well that sounds hopeful to me! 😉

I wonder if there's some enrichment we can think of for him, that he can play with without having to be able to move around...

That would be a great idea 😍. I can’t risk getting him a friend as he may be a carrier now of whatever caused this horrendous situation 😞. It would be lovely to help him as I’m out at work all day ..

Does he live next door to your girl? Sometimes interaction through the bars with another pig is enough 👍
No, our little girl is in my bedroom. I could put their cages next to each other but wouldn’t want them to touch noses. I’m still so worried about Peanut having something infectious. I’m obsessive about hand washing and I even have separate bags of hay and nuggets for them both 😥

Yes you're probably right there actually... Sometimes a teddy, perhaps rubbed in another pigs scent can help. Make sure it's one without plastic eyes, and keep an eye to make sure he doesn't chew it.

Thank you, this is brilliant. I do want to try and adapt his living space to make it more comfortable and cosy for him 💕

I moved my Nerys into the loosely filled hay tray for some hours each day so she could burrow and sleep in there as well as nibble off and on as much as she wanted. Have a piece of cucumber within reach of the mouth in case he feels thirsty during that time.

Try different dry forage or the odd speciality hay as extra treats. If you have access to dog pee free grass and/or dandelion, offer him a little every day (be careful about the quantity if he is not used to it as it can cause massive digestive problems when not introduced carefully).

Tiny bits of apple or carrot or other veg you cook with can also act as little savoury or sweet treats - just be careful about how much/how often you give them.

Think about a vibrating mat of some sort for him to use for half an hour once or twice daily to help stimulate his digestive system for a better long term digestion.

Please make sure that you check the underside especially of his weight bearing front legs daily because he is no longer able to take the weight of them easily.

Also make sure that you clean around his bits regularly as that is a job he can no longer do and that you comb him regularly spreading the oil of his grease gland over his coat.

Since he is a single boar and has nobody to fall out with, you can move your sow's cage right next to his so they can interact through the bars. Sows of any number can live next to a single boar (neutered or not), just as long as he cannot get at them. That is probably by far the best stimulation and reason to live. Make sure that they can touch noses and build up a friendship through the bars.

Hi there I'm sorry there has been no improvement but hopefully the ideas people have given you will help him 💐
Thank you 🌻 I hope so. Here’s a little photo of him.. his nose is still so sticky and despite lots of antibiotics that’s not gone away. I wipe and wash his little nose but that’s a separate issue to his paralysis 😞

Poor gorgeous boy. He'll struggle to wipe his nose and who likes antibiotics like baytril?

I know. Baytril is awful tasting. He’s on a different one at the moment. Co-trimoxazole. 0.7mg a day. Smells like banana! It’s been a week since his last vet trip so I need to take him in for another check-up on Monday. That’s when my local piggy vet, Peter, is back in.

Thank you for all these great ideas 😍. Peanut loves carrot, cucumber, celery and red bell pepper so he has 1 or 2 of those every day in addition to romaine lettuce, especially cucumber as it’s refreshing 💦. I buy the forage called Fields of Gold which my piggies have always gone wild for! It’s got dried dandelion in there as well 🌱🌱

His front feet look a bit red but he doesn’t wheek when I touch them. I’m going to give his bottom a little bath this afternoon with piggy shampoo 🫧

Please just give it a daily wipe and also check the lower body for urine scald and sores from lying.

You can find all the practical care advice and what complications to look out for in piggies with long term back leg paralysis in the mobility guide. I would strongly encourage you to bookmark it and to read through it. You should find it very helpful.
