Hi, I seem to be having a bad patch of luck with 2 of my 4 piggies atm and particularly worried about 1 in particular.

I spotted lice on my piggies Peanut and Maggie (living in same cage, have 2 other piggies living in separate cage but in same room) just over a week ago. So I cleaned them out thoroughly before I ordered and bathed both in the Gorgeous Guinea Lice n Easy shampoo last Tuesday. Today I cleaned them out thoroughly again (I clean them out every 3-4 days anyway) and I shampooed them for the second time, and whilst doing so, noticed a horrible bald and sore patch on Maggie. http://www.flickr.com/photos/90232235@N07/8200558498/in/photostream :(

This was definitely not there last Tuesday, and before I went away this weekend (my mum looks after them at these times.) All the years I have had pigs I have never seen anything like this!

Does anyone have an idea what it is? And what the best course of action/treatment is? Bearing in mind I've been treating them for lice with the GG shampoo.

This looks like typical ringworm. You need to get to a vet to get some treatment for it, I'm afraid GG shampoo will not get rid of this. Imaverol works wonders. 3 baths 3 days apart. You will need to isolate all effected piggies and disinfected the cage with a fungacidial disinfectant such as F10 or Anigene. All toys etc will need to be disinfected. All fleece washed at 100 degrees and any wooden toys etc either thrown out or disinfected effectively. . It is highly contagious to other guinea pigs and sometime to us.

x.

Thanks for the reply! Just a couple of further questions.. Would I need to throw away cardboard boxes from the cage, or would the fungus not live on that? And how long before I can put Maggie back into the cage with her mate Peanut?

i had a bad time with this when i got my 2 babies and canastan cream 3 times a day and fungiclenz shampoo every 3 day and it was amazing, i steam clean everything every other day, it took me about a month to get them both clear
