This afternoon I was given a young sow by a neighbour's friend. She got her a couple of weeks ago but her kids are not interested in her >:( My neighbour told her I'd take it without even asking me!
She looks about 10 weeks old but I'm not too sure. Will try to post photo's for your help with this.
I have put her in a make-shift cage until I decide what to do with her but I'm worried as she has just been still as a statue since she was put in it. I know she is prob in shock due to a change in surroundings but I feel very sorry for the little mite. She's not touched her veggies or even blinked as far as I can tell.

Grrrr... This is my third guinea pig that I have acquired due to parents buying them for very young children. Makes me quite cross. Luckily 2 of my boys are getting neutred next week so in a months or so she could go in with one of them.

Re: Suddenly acquired a scaredy pig

She should calm down soon, don't worry. Leave her quiet overnight with her vegs and such and she'll warm to you soon enough I'm sure :)

Re: Suddenly acquired a scaredy pig

Aww..poor little thing. You will have to call her Lucky! as she is now with you and will be well cared for.

Sadly, it happens time and time again with children loosing interest. I think the majority of my pigs are from similar situations. :(

Have you got a cardboard box or pig house to put in her temp cage, so she can hide ? if you have it may make her feel more secure until she gets her confidence and starts to trust you.

Look forward to seeing the pics later.

xx

Re: Suddenly acquired a scaredy pig

Thanks for the reassurance. Yes, she is hiding in a small box. I feel so sorry for her. Do you think she'd be happier where she can hear other piggies or will this scare her more?
She is gorgeous though. I think maybe a Himi? with red eyes.

Re: Suddenly acquired a scaredy pig

She will settle down in time, give her some time just to assess her new surroundings. Don't give here to many veggies, as being only young probably won't be that use to them. I personally would keep her away from your other guineas until you know she is perfectly healthy. She sounds like a beautiful guinea, can't wait to see pictures. O0

Ahhh.. I put it right under her nose and she hasn't touched it. I'll leave her for a couple of hours before I disturb her again.

Thanks CC. You're right, I must make sure she is healthy first. No signs of mites or anything yet (fingers crossed.) I am such a worrier! It is strange because I am so laid back about everything else except my pigs. ::)

Awww she is gorgeous. :smitten: Why do parents buy kids pets knowing full well they will lose interest. :tickedoff:

;D I'm exactly the same, the world wouldn't be the same without guineas. :smitten:

I have acquired a new piggy today too, his name is Harry, and he is sitting just like your little girl with carrot and cabbage under his nose and he hasn't touched them either.

Hopefully when i go back in to check he'll at least have nibbled them? let me know how she gets on and i'll keep you posted on my Harry!

with any luck they'll both have full tummies soon!
x

Great. I'd like that! it must be very overwhelming for them. They're usually much more settled after a week or so, so we'll both have to give updates. I have called her Moomin because she looks like one and it was my fave cartoon as a child.

have been in to look at my herd and harry has ventured out of the igloo and although still looking a bit scared he didnt run away when i went in! still nothing to eat or drink tho as yet :-\ hopefully soon! x

Think Moomin has eaten a piece of cucumber. Or she might just be sitting on it. 98)

Wow! Moomin what a cool name! I used to look after a horse that was nicknamed Moomin she was strawberry roan and had a moomin face

Thank you. She'll be fine. By the end of the week she'll be bossing me around like my other pigs do.

have managed to have a big hug with my harry and think he has mites :'( big bald patch across his tummy and around his front legs with no scabs tho? and then a few tiny scabs at the back of his neck, so will b treating that and keeping him well away from my girls.

and the pet shop just didnt even mention it. i mean, i know i should have checked him over but they just shut him in a box and took him to the till! :tickedoff: will mention it when i go back in and c what they say.

anyway, apart from that prob i now know about,

Harry rolled onto his back on my tummy like a baby and let me hug and stroke him :smitten:
and i know he has eaten some dry food but no veg and had a drink. (maybe they didnt give much/any vegetables at the pet shop? :-\)

well sorry for the rant am just sad for my little fella xx

Awww poor little guy. Do you think that is probably the reason he wasn't brought by anyone else? You will have him back to normal in no time and he will start eating his veg soon enough, probably just trying to work out what it is. ;)

dont really know becuase he is so handsome to me!

one girl in the pet shop said its "because he's so big"

and the other girl said "he was in a group with two prettier guinea pigs and then 'him' and someone took the other two, ever since then nobody wanted him!" when i took him! they really annoyed me!

anyway he'll b wheeking 4 veggies soon, i'll make sure! he's got a good home now, am so pleased i sould rescue him especially now i know he needs his skin treating too. x

B..... cheek!

Hello little Moomin :smitten: :smitten: She is so pretty!

Harry will get there with your care. Keep your chin up.
Went into Moomin this morning (she is living in my office in quarantine) and she was out of her hidey house. Yay. some off the veg had gone and she had obviously been foraging in the dried food. But she is still petrified. She is currentlhy adopting the 'if I stay very still then she won't notice I'm here' tactic. I just wanna get in there and cuddle her but I know I need to be patient.

am so glad moomin is coming out a bit ;D will post some piccies of my harry later on so u can see my big fella! x

I recently took on a piggie very similar to moomin and she behaved in exactly the same way hardly moving around etc........I realised after a short time that she was blind, she has continued to thrive but definately doesn't move around as much as her housemate. She's about 3 months old. I always tut tut just before I pick her up so as not to scare her and she knows what is about to happen, it has worked well, she's a sweetie.

Don't want to be scary or anything but is her sight ok? Hope she's settling in anyway, she's in the best place now, she's loved but would agree to keep her seperate just in case she has anything she might pass on. I wish you well with her x
