Hi,

I know you can’t diagnose and thinking of a Vet next week but…

What does anyone think of a sudden wet rear end in a 4 year old sow. She is speyed.

My lovely Maria, always grooming and very fastidious. Short hair. This morning soaked and stained with urine around 3 inch circle from bottom. Not smelly . She has been a bit off food for about 5 days. As if she was just sitting in a big pool. Cage completely cleaned 2 days ago . No new food or substrate. No weight loss.

I have noticed a bit of a stained bottom recently. No sign of blood.

I gave her a rear end bath this morning and dried her, but worried it happened for a reason ? Noticed her cage perhaps a bit wetter than normal lately when I spot clean. She won’t touch a water bottle but healthily on cucumber a daily Romaine lettuce. Plenty of hay always.

Any ideas ?

This can be a sign of a UTI (bladder infection) even in the absence of other signs and is definitely worth a vet visit. You can try to collect a urine sample to take to the vet (though with guinea pigs this obviously isn't easy, I would try to feed mine something watery on my lap and then try to stick a tupperware under them when they eventually have to pee with varying levels of success- it obviously won't be sterile but it can be tested for leukocytes, blood, protein, etc.) If that doesn't work don't worry, they can still assess based on symptoms and examination.

All the best and hope your piggie soon feels back to normal!

I’m sorry to hear this.

I agree, it can be a sign of a urinary infection so she definitely does need to see a vet. In the very early stages of a UTI symptoms aren’t always consistent so she may seem ok one day and then in pain the next.

The other thing to consider is getting a wet bottom can be due to sitting in one spot as a result of a different health issue or discomfort elsewhere in the body causing a reluctance to move.

Make sure to weigh to daily weight checks so you can more closely monitor hay intake, particularly as you note her being a bit off food.

I hope she is ok
