Gus is about 14months old and over the last week he's had rapid breathing with his haunches going in and out. He's continued to eat, drink, move around and interact. We took him the Vet, last Wednesday, (cavy savvy) and he couldn't find anything wrong with his chest, heartbeat, temperature and said to watch him.

Late Saturday he started to breathe more heavily with his chest also going in and out, but brave little Gus was still eating, drinking, interacting and he later 'recovered' back to rapid breathing. however we took him back to the Vet on Sunday and again - nothing was found apart from the rapid breathing. The Vet decided to start him on Forusamide twice a day.

Up until this evening there was no change and no loss of weight. But this evening he went downhill: he was eating at 5pm, at 7.30pm he was flopped out and clearly not breathing very well, making little quiet breath noises, and chewing, he was a little blue and his nostrils were flaring.

Straight back to the Vet and he is now in Intensive Care but responding to oxygen and the cool environment. He has had his diuretic and an antibiotic injection, his chest xray shows his gut etc is okay and his chest and heart appear to be clear though the film wasn't a bit blurry due to his rapid breathing. I didn't want the vet to sedate him, she will try and do another xray later tonight. He has pooed and they were going to try to get him to eat but said they would feed him if he didn't.

He is kept in an outside cage with hay as bedding, we cover the top of the run with light fleece blankets to keep the sun off and help the two pigs keep cool. Today I've given them cold lettuce and cucumber and changed their water to help keep them cool. Milo, Gus's brother, is fine. Gus also has cataracts, virtually no vision in his R eye and impaired vision in his left.

Any thoughts folks?

Very worried and upset :...

I'm afraid I have absolutely no idea. I just wanted to say I really hope you work it out and Gus feels better soon. I know how worrying a sick piggy can be.

Fingers crossed for your poor little guy.

Little loves for his brother Milo i'm sure he's missing Gus, would the vets consider him visiting his brother at all for company? If Gus is up to a visit.

HEALING VIBES FOR GUS XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Glynis, Velvet and Onyx x

All I can say is bring him inside if you haven't already. Just while he is sick or for extreme heat issues.

No advice, just wanted to send lots of healing vibes to Gus x

Thank you!

Thank you for your messages of support for Gus and myself!

The Vet called this morning, he had a good night and they have found that he has an abscess near his bottom - the rapid breathing was pain :-( Poor poor Gus. They gave him pain killers and he was immediately more comfortable.

They are going to check him over this morning and we are waiting for a call to see what is advisable. He is likely to need to have to have it cleaned up, we've asked that this be done with gas and not injectable anaesthetic.

Hoping they can sort this out, he must have had it for nearly a week :-(

yes, they can. If he hadn't been in the Vets overnight they wouldn't have found it, it seems it burst when the vet took his temperature. We'd not have noticed if he'd been in his cage, doesn't help that his fur is white...
