So I've been having an ongoing problem with Jericho, last year around the same time he started to get blood in his urine and pain when he went to the toilet, was put on antibiotics and painkillers, the blood stopped but he still didn't seem right, two weeks later the same things, more antibiotics and painkillers and the same thing happened again. So after some advice from a guinea pig specialist and her passing that info onto my local vet Jericho was given cystophan, he began to gain weight, no blood, no pain, so I took him off of both, he's been fine for around 6 months, then the other week I noticed him squeaking, took him out to check his urine, low and behold, blood again, he went back to the vet and is currently on Sulfatrim and painkillers, however, he is actually still in pain and still has blood in his urine, he has also dropped down from around 2kg to about 1136g which I'm obviously concerned about. I've ordered him some cystophan and will ask my son to start syringe feeding him as he's really good at that kind of thing.

Does anyone know what dosage he should be on in regards to the Sulfatrim? he's on 0.25ml twice per day, however, my son read the label wrong and he as on 0.25ml once per day for about 4 or 5 days, luckily I looked at the label and saw it was twice and he's been on 2 x per day for about three days.

I have contacted the vets in regards to the mistake to see what they say, I'm wondering if he should actually have an xray to check for bladder stones or just keep trying the meds and see if it clears, if not then have an xray done. I'm just worried about his weight and the fact he's still in pain.

Actually I got his weight wrong, luckily I have his old weights written down, he's usually around 1.2kg he's 1136g at the moment, so not a massive loss, that's my crap concentration for you.

Sulfatrim is basically the unflavoured new exotics animal version of adult septrin, i.e. it is double the strength of the pediatric septrin that you are used to. Please give the dosage as stated on the label. It is correct!

If he doesnt improve or you are worried, having him xrayed for stones certainly wont do him any harm! Hopefully it is just an IC flare and it clears soon.

Its probably best to continue with the cystophan for life, as if it helps, it is usually needed for long term bladder issues.

Did he have anything different that he hasnt had over the past 6 months when he was stable? Higher calcium veg, different pellets, treats or new forages? Different piggies have different triggers, and it takes a while to pick up on what can trigger it.

Hopefully it is just a small blip and hes on the mend soon x

Yeah I'm going to continues with the cystophan this time.

He's on the recommended diet on this forum, celery, coriander, cucumber etc. no pepper mind as he seemed a bit bloated when he ate it before. they also have filtered water, normal hay and pellets, it just seemed to happen at this time of year for some weird reason, it's not because they go on grass because they don't due to red ants and other creepy crawlies.

Was already thinking about stones and having him xrayed if it doesn't clear.

He's had his first dose of cystophan, don't know how long it takes to work I hope it's not too long with him being in pain?

I couldnt say, crunchie took a couple of weeks. But the metacam will do the same job for now and bring down ang inflammation x
