Sulfatrim is obviously the new unflavoured animal version for septrin that is now available to vets. It seems to be roughly double strength to pediatric septrin and - going by Hywel's reaction to it - taste about as great as baytril, so ideally you want to mask the flavour somewhat...
Have you got any experience with it yet,@Abi_nurse ?

I had to rush Hywel to the vets yesterday evening as his dental abscess had come back and developed very quickly over the last couple of days; it promptly burst when the vet examined it. Thankfully there was one free slot left in a branch across town and the Cat&Rabbit Clinic notes had arrived in time in Hywel's Coventry file for the vet to catch up on; it had involved some frantic phone calling between three vet clinics! The septrin is just there to tidy Hywel over the weekend as the vets didn't have zithromax available straight away.

The timing however couldn't be much worse - my hub is currently undergoing a hernia operation and won't be allowed to drive for the next couple of weeks, and Simon and Kim Maddock are away on holiday next week... Thankfully, with the abscess being in the hole left by a lower incisor, his teeth are not badly affected, so he should be OK with waiting for a check up after Simon is back again.

Sorry you're having a hard time of it just now, I hope everything is okay for your husband and piggies.

As for the Sulfatrim, I was given this after first being given Baytril (1ml) but Toast absolutely detested the flavour of the Baytril and would spit it out.
She was put onto Sulfatrim (0.4mls) and she takes it (almost) fine. Doesn't seem to be affected by the taste at all, just doesn't like having a syringe put near her

What dose have you been prescribed? I'm guessing it's the same strength as adult septrin. Could the vet not have written you a prescription to take to a pharmacy to get Zithromax?

Medivet have written a prescription for collection at my local branch (which also didn't have any zithromax handy), so they rang me at lunchtime yesterday to say that a prescription was ready to be picked up, but as my husband was in hospital for his hernia operation (with no idea when he would be back and what state he would be in), I have not been able to go into town by bus for collection and purchase, so will have to do that tomorrow.

He is currently on 0.26 ml twice daily. From Hywel's reaction, unflavoured sulfatrim is every bit as horrible as baytril, but he takes it well when mixed with an equal amount of fruit juice.

Thankfully, Hywel is so far keeping his weight stable at 950g (he's lost the 100g he's made good since December) with only relatively minor topping up from me. His teeth will need a check and likely a bit of filing when Simon is back, but so far he is hanging in there. He is still happily munching his way through a goodly portion of fresh grass in the afternoon and is eating fresh herbs and finely sliced veg...
