Hi everyone, my guinea pigs have been diagnose with URI and been prescribed Sulfatrim for a week and then I’m going back to see if they need more in a week. Has anyone had their guinea pigs on Sulfatrim before? If you have could you tell me how it went for your guinea pigs as them being 10 weeks old they cannot give baytril and I’d like to know whether sulfatrim is effective. thanks!

I've had one of mine given Sulfatrim, and it did the job for him. It works better against some bugs than others. I was told that Baytril is a broad-spectrum antibiotic so works for more bugs than some other antibiotics but probably not all bugs.
(My boar had repeated URIs, he had Zithromax usually because Baytril didn't work well for him, until the last one which needed Sulfatrim instead.)
Hopefully the Sulfatrim will work for your little ones!

How many times did your pig at an URI? That’s good that it worked! Thanks for replying

Sulfatrim is the vet brand of septrin/bactrim that is now licensed for exotics pets. It is adult strength, i.e. the dosage is half of that of pediatric septrin and is not flavoured with banana and therefore not as nice tasting.

Ah yes, my guinea pigs didn’t like the taste, so I had to keep their mouths open and I think they hated me for it! ... they forgave me when I gave them some treats though

Yes, Hadley was on Sulfatrim for a respiratory infection a year or so ago. Provided the bacteria causing the problem are susceptible to it, it is effective. If they don't clear up on this drug, another one may have to be tried, but hopefully this will do the trick!
