Hi all,
Today my fozz went to to vets. His weight has dropped (no obvious reason) and the vet said his breathing was louder than desirable. He's prescribed sulfatrim twice daily for 10 days. Anyone have any experience of this?

Yes it is often known as septrin. How much weight loss has he had? Is he eating okay?

He is eating OK although not as sustained as normal. His teeth have been checked and he's eating hay and grass. Lost around 90g (which was pretty shocking!) Vet didn't seem too overly concerned and suggested sulfatrim as a precautionary measure. He also suggested counting his breaths, which we're really not sure about.

Sulfatrim is the vet licensed Uk brand name for septrin (UK) / bactrim (US). it is in fact unflavoured adult strength septrin (i.e. double the strength of the old pediatric septrin). Septrin is generally not quite as harsh on the guts as baytril.

I would consider offering extra top up feed, but on a voluntary basis. How familiar is your vet with guinea pigs?

Thank you. Is it effective? As far as I can tell (I wasn't the one who went to the vets) our vet isn't too concerned and wants to use this to prevent anything from potentially getting worse.

When did he last have a dental at Simon's? Sometimes piggies with dental issues can aspirate food onto their lungs. I wonder if that is what has happened xx
Fozz doesn't have dentals done as his teeth have always been pretty good (touch wood) He tends to just tag along to keep rollie company! Simon looked at fozz last time as I was worried about cystitis.

When Ruby was on Sulfatram she tolerated it well (better than Baytril) and it cleared up her residual urinary infection.
