summer has cystitis

Hi all just asking for healing vibes for summer please as she was taken to the vet today as she was squeaking when she pee and the vet said she has cystitis poor little mite anyway he also didn't rule out stones he wants to see how she gets on with the antibiotics and anti inflammatory so she has a check up on monday if no better he said she might need a x-ray. so healing vibes for her please xxxxxxxxxx:(
 
I am so sorry - cystitis and stones are no joy. I'm sending my best wishes to Summer!

But your guinea pig needs no general aneathestic to be x-rayed (wrapping it well and placing it on a soft surface does the trick as well and is a lot easier on the piggy as well as on your purse!)

What meds and doses is Summer on? Has she got a painkiller and a probiotic as well?

the vet gave her bytril and a anti inflammatory and thank you for well wishes xx
 
Sending good vibes to your sweetie, my specks had cystitis a couple of weeks back, heres hoping she gets better soon.
 
If you can, ask your vet to change it pediatric septrin. Baytril is the only licenced antibiotic for guinea pigs, but it is pretty heavy on the guts. Septrin is a form of the active ingredient mentioned on the guinealynx site; it works especially well in case of urinary tract infections and is a lot easier on the body.

Make sure that you give Summer as much unsweetened cranberry juice as she will take - up to 50ml a day. If necessary, mix it with water. The more Summer drinks, the more bacteria you can flush out of the bladder. Ocean Wave light is widely available in supermarkets.
 
she doesnt mind the anti inflammatory/painkiller but she don't like the antibiotics bless her i need to give her the antibiotics 2 times a day and the other one just once a day.

Have you ever tasted baytril? I got some on my fingers once, and it is beyond horrible!

I hope you both remembered to take some probiotics.

After all "Baytril can be harsh on the guts" so we are told...................frequently.

As for cystitis I take an xray sooner than later, the probability that stones are the cause is so high it is not worth waiting to see if the cystitis is caused by an infection.

I hope the Baytril and anti-inflammatory (Rimadyl? Metacam?) helps clears Summer's cystitis up. Plenty of fluids will help flush her bladder out too.
 
awww poor little thing. Hope she gets on well with her medication and gets better soon x
 
hi laura it's metacam she has for anti inflammatory but this morning i took her out her cage to give her meds and her tummy feels quite puffy/bloat is this normal or should i be worried?
 
You should be worried!

If it the belly is hard, springy and painful, then take her to the vets as quickly as possible, as bloat can kill.
 
she has tried to pee several times and she is still squeaking but i dont think any urine is coming out
 
She may have a stone/sludge stuck in her urethra. She could possibly have urine retention, which would need urgent attention, albeit the condition is treatable, if only temporarily, without the need for a GA.

she isn't comfy atall bless her and her sister keeps lying beside her when she went to try and pee a bit ago the bedding was dry
 
While some sows can pass bladder/urethral stones on their own, there are those that are a bit too big to go down the urethra; it sounds as though one of APs suggestions is quite possible.

It's worth seeing if you can get her into the vet this afternoon and get her x-rayed, you need to know what's causing her new symptoms.
 
ok i have observed her today and she still isn't too good so i'm gonna call the vets to speak to a vet personally to see if she needs urgent care or can wait till tomorrow
 
I am sorry to hear about Summer :( I agree with the others as the hard tummy doesn't sound right to me. If she only has a urine infection, she should be able to still urinate.

her tummy doesn't feel hard its kinda swollen and puffy hard to explain but she is still finding it hard to urinate
 
that is possible claire i am gonna call the vet soon as they will be in at 7.15 pm and see as the meds dont seem to be kicking in yesterday atleast she could pee but with discomfort and today it seems she can only pee a little if any
 
ok vet advised to observe her overnight and she is to go in tomorrow morning to check her out so fingers crossed she will be ok
