my poor summer who is nearly 4 had a large abscess under the jaw, they drained it about 2 weeks and i have been milking it, and she was on antibotics and i was cleaning it - but the hole closed up and the puss was still there as you should smell and its smells bad, so i took her back to the vets today and they have reopened the hole and a bit of puss came out, she is now on septrin and flagyl-s susp to try and clear this bateria - has anyone had the same problem and will this new medicine finally get rid of this puss from the abscess? - i feel really sorry for her, as he's getting old - i will be cleaning it and draining it, but i am hoping this abscess does go. She is eating fine. The vets she went to are pretty good with guinea pigs, so i am hoping this will now work?

Abscesses are nasty things, and it can take some time and several tries to get rid of them. If you can, try to keep the hole open for as long as possible - ideally until every bit of pus has gone - so pouches can't refill.

You are doing fine!

to be honest i found it hard to keep the hole open - silly question, but if it does go to close up again, whats the best thing or way to keep it open? thanks

Firstly see if your vet will prescribe zithromax. It's the best antibiotic to use for abscesses.

It can be difficult to keep the hole open and I used to literally pull the scab that was forming off morning and evening. Also when I flushed it I would make sure I really pushed the syringe into the hole to make sure it was staying open.
