Hello, I'm Sunny's dad and I would like to share his story...
In July 2008 my daughter (then age 11) saved her money to get a guinea pig. When she had enough we went to the pet store and bought "Sunny". The store told us it was a girl piggie. Sunny lived in a nice size cage in my daughters room for 3 1/2 years. My only connection with Sunny was when I would help my daughter change the cage cedar each week. Then in May of 2012 my daughter noticed it's bottom was full of "poop". The next day Sunny looked like she was going to "pass". I did some quick research and found out it was impacted and wasn't passing it's poop. I called a vet that deals with exotic pets and brought Sunny in. Turns out I was right about the impaction, but we were wrong about the gender. Sunny was a male! For 3 1/2 years we were referring to it as a "her" but it was really a "him". When I saw the helplessness of this poor piggie and how cute HE really was my heart melted. I was now in love with this piggie! He was no longer my daughter's pet but rather "my" Sunny. He survived the impaction and for the next four months I cleaned out the poop from him twice a day (I actually got very good at doing it and after a while could clean him out in 5 minutes!). I took extra good care of him, but he started 'slowing down'. I had him at the vets at least once a month from May to Sept with some issue but Sunny always pulled through. On Monday, Sept 17th Sunny really started slowing down. he stopped eating and drinking. I called the vet and took him in again. This time the doctor said he wouldn't recover. He was in a lot of pain. My heart was completely broken. I had to "put him to sleep" that night. My heart is still broken. I can't believe how attached I got to him in the last four months. I love you Sunny and miss you very very much :( - your dad.

Awww how nice to hear a piggies story from a dads point of view. I am so glad you 'met' Sunny before he passed away, it sounds like you did a grand job with him.

I'm so sorry you lost him, it is heartbreaking each and every time, but arent we so lucky to have loved and cherised these amazing little creatures?

Rip Sunny, sleep well lovely.

I rarely look at the Rainbow Bridge section unless it is piggies I have come to know on this forum. That is because I am a first time piggie mum to 2 boys and I haven't had them that long so I just don't want to think about that side of it yet. I was intrigued by yours because it was from a dad's point of view. A lovely tribute to Sunny that you fell in love with him and took such good care of his impaction issue. I am sure that gave him a longer life than he would have had otherwise with less caring adults.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It is always difficult losing a piggy but somehow worse when you have spent months nursing them.

You gave Sunny a wonderful life and learnt what it means to be a piggy slave. Once again I am sorry for your loss. Popcorn free Sunny.

It's so sad when you have nursed a piggy but still loose them-this happened to us this year. It sounds like you had a wonderful bond with him and he had a lovely life being well cared for by someone who loved him so much.

RIP Sunny x

It is very tough when you lose such a hard fought battle; it leaves you raw and heart-sore. You forge such a close bond during that time!

But you have done great by Sunny; he will always have a very special place in your heart.

Give yourself time to grieve and to recover from it all.

RIP Sunny

So sorry you lost Sunny, it's obvious how much you grew to love him and he's got a special place in your heart forever. Hope you are your daughter are ok.

RIP Sunny

That is such a lovely tribute and it's wonderful to hear of the bond you had. Sweet dreams little Sunny.

Update...
Sunny was cremated on Sept. 22nd. His remains are in a nice wooden box which I placed inside his pigloo. We also received a cast print of Sunny's foot. So Sunny will never be forgotten. My daughter and I have now decided to get another piggie. I guess we truly are "piggie slaves". I realize there were two things I could have done better for Sunny. Since I can no longer do them for him I would like to do them for other piggies. First, Sunny's cage was too small. I never knew it until after he passed away. Now, looking at his cage and reading about cages on this forum and the internet I realize he needed something bigger. So I went and purchased a nice big cage with two levels. Second, I now realize Sunny should have had another piggie friend to live with. We gave him lots of attention, but he should have had a friend. So, we are going to purchase 2 or 3 this time! The cage is said to be for up to 4 piggies, so 2 or 3 should give them plenty of room. I still miss Sunny soooo much, and no pig can replace him, but I look forward to welcoming and caring for some new piggies into my life.
Love you Sunny! - your dad

Awwwww thats lovely to hear and I love the paw bit.

I am the same as you, I had one piggy in far toooooo small a cage before I found out, but its the learning that matters.

I would just say if you are getting boys I would probably get two as its harder to get three that will live happily ever after, there is loads of info on here about out, but girls are different, id just do your research first.

So glad your piggy adventure will continue x
