I went into Petsmart the other day, and guess what I saw? I saw 6 boars in one tank while 2 other guinea pigs were in the other same sized tank. The 6 were climbing on top of each other because there was not enough space, chasing each other around and trying to nip, and to top it all off, no hay! I told a lady very politely "I have noticed that the top two guinea pigs have a lot more space than the ones on the bottom," and she replied "Why would I care?" in the most rude way. I was running out of patience and 2 minutes later I said to her "The 6 guinea pigs have run out of hay.". I got an answer that sounded like this "Yeah, they do that WAY too often. What's wrong with them? As soon as I refill it for them they eat it all up! No way I'm refilling the hay for those no good guinea pigs.". :hb: I hate it when people do that and treat piggies like they're trash! Grrrrrr...

I didn't take a picture... but I should have. I will if I ever encounter her or anyone like her again.

She shouldn't be working in a pet store if she has no time for ALL animals. ;-(

Disgusting lady! Perhaps she would like to be in a cramped tank with no food. Grr :hb::rant:

Disgusting. I would have reported her to someone higher in charge . Guinea pigs need constant hay as we all know so I would have stated that to her in disgust. Horrible woman. She shouldn't be working there and I would report the fact 6 boars are in a tiny cage together when we all know how hormonal they can be.

Write to corporate at petsmart I did and they took care of my issue of too many pigs in one tank. But you have a bit more to complain about and I think they should know.

Great ideas, everyone. 6 boars, going through the hormonal stage in a cramped tank! Sadly, I may have to get my piggies from there. It's very hard to find reputable rescues and breeders close to me.

Did you not mention it to the store manager? I had something similar happen in a well known pet store in the Uk a few months ago. Attitude was, 'well they had hay a while ago thry don't need it until later' at which point I spoke to the manager who was very very apologetic, asked me who it was and had a word with them. But he also put hay in for them straight away. I have been back since and there have been no issues.

Sorry I don't mean to be rude but I really do think for the sake of the piggies you must say something.

I had no idea where the store manager was, and when I asked nobody had an answer for me.

I had this happen to me a month ago at petsmart. I went online and sent an email to corporate and they took care of it and emailed me back. You HAVE to at least do that for the pigs. They will ask store location ect. The next time I went in afterwards it was taken care of.

That is terrible. Can you report her to the RSPCA, it is cruelty to animals, as she is refusing to give the piggies their BASIC needs. It doesn't take much effort to fill up some hay, and neglect to the pigs. Stupid women.

Thank you so much! I just emailed with the store location...I'll check if it's taken care of next time I'm there!

Brilliant, thats really good news. The impact of people like that is huge if they are not stopped. Really pleased you were able to do something.

I see us forum members as a small army of animal lovers doing our bit to help animals all over the world!

Yay I'm so glad you did that! I got my pigs at petco. The one by me seems to treat the pigs well. The girls have a large area, the boys not so much but they only have at most two boys together and they're always clean and have what they need.

Don't you feel better?!? I know I did. Now I have a dilemma lol. The petco by my house has had this one BIG boar for a looooong time. He had a friend and they must have been very bonded as they were in a very small space. One of them was bought I assume a month ago. I feel so bad for this poor loan boy, he looks like a big love.

I was thinking I could have him neutered but then I wanted to slap myself lol. I can barely keep up with 3 pigs. Sigh.... I should put this in it's own thread lol.

How do people like this manage to get jobs in pet shops when I love animals, done animal care at college yet I'm always rejected :(
They should judge them on how they look after the animals, retail experience or whatever shouldn't matter, as long as you're good with the animals then there shouldn't be a problem in getting the job :/

I have told them I have a degree as a vet tech when applying before. I think they WANT people who don't know better, because they can tell them what THEY want them to do and the employee doesn't know any better so they aren't going to say or do anything different.

The naive employee will sell that guinea pig, rat or gerbil alone, and suggest putting them in a small cage, sell them bad cheap food, that the new owner will buy at the pet shop.

I have thought about this A LOT! and this is the conclusion I have come too.

They don't want people working there who know how to properly care for animals because, they cause problems, they would question things and would lose the store money, by suggesting other cages eg: c c, the actual sq. ft needed, fresh veggies, need a sitter when gone, need floor time. They might tell owners that they should not be alone and lose a sale because the owner wouldn't want two of an animal or tell them that children that young aren't good for this type of animal, and or might possibly turn them into someone or agency. MONEY MONEY MONEY!
