Hi, I'm new to the forum, so maybe I should start with an introduction... My name's Josh, I live in the Memphis, Tennessee area. I love animals, almost more than I like people ;) In the past I have been the owner of a hedgehog (whom had one foot amputated due to an injury before I bought her), 2 ferrets, and a cat which sadly passed away this past November. I now am the owner of three ! guinea pigs, two of which were just born last night. And here's the story on that:

I got my first guinea pig back in December. I was at Petco, looking to buy one, and I asked the fellow working there to let me handle a few of them to test out their behavior and make sure they were healthy. He informed me that someone had a couple of piggies that had babies, and the owners did not want the babies so they brought them up to Petco and let them find them new homes. He went and got her from the back and handed her to me. She was a very sweet, making cute, calm little chirps. I fell in love with her right away. He told me that I could adopt her for free, and gave me a booklet with coupons for supplies that I would need. They claimed she was just a baby at about 3 months old. So I purchased food, bedding, etc. and took her home with me. I named her Ixchel. Little did I know she was pregnant...

I noticed a few nights ago that she had gotten incredibly fat, and I couldn't figure out the reason. She looked like she had little barrels in her sides. Last night she was chirping non stop, I figured it was because she had become overweight and was being a pig and wanted more food (which I did not give to her for she had already eaten 3 bowls that day, and I decided that she needed to start dieting.)

Well, I was going to feed her a couple of hours ago, and noticed two little ones shadowing along behind her! They're alot bigger than I figured they would be, and a complete surprise. They're cute little rascals though, I believe I'm going to keep one of them, possibly both. I was sad to see that there was one that did not make it in the igloo :'( But I guess that happens sometimes, as sad as it is...

Anyone have any advice on raising them to be strapping young piggies, or name suggestions?

Hi Josh ( I've got a son called Josh) you are lucky to have some wonderful baby pigs the mum must have been quite young to get pregnant so early,
mum will do the raising of the babys when about 3 to 4 weeks you will need to sex them if boys obviously they will need to be removed from mum and any sisters he may have or you will end up with more pigs, as you will see they are mini versions of mum eating and drinking running about , so apart from keeping them all cleaned out theres nothing much for you to do for a few weeks, until parting them,
I too took on a 6 month old female 3 weeks ago only to find she too had a baby last week hes a week old today we called him Henry, he is adorable, mum definatly did not look pregnant and you would think I would know being as i have kept pigs for over 30 years but even the more experienced get caught out some time
I find watching baby pigs with mum hypnotising and hope you keep them both, I never ever part with mine and now have 34,
it often happens that one or more maybe still born, mum maybe be inexperienced in it being her first litter, or she had no time to clean it up when she gave birth to the next,
but you enjoy the new arrivals as for names go for a theme like flowers famous people groups ( I adore Bon Jovi so have a Richie Tico and Jovi ) books like Harry Potter I have a dobby etc or as some one suggested seasons spring summer etc, good luck and loved the photo, enjoy your new family, and welcome to the forum you will pick up some wonderful advice on here and make great friends

Hi Josh, what beautiful babies and mum is gorgeous too. As Michelle said the most important thing is to sex them so you can split any boys away at about 3 weeks old as believe it or not they're rather early developers ;D They are easy to sex - this site gives good pics

I'm quite new to guinapigs and I've managed to help a friend sex babies aged 2 days so it is fairly easy. Hopefully you'll have two baby sows so they can stay with mum (you'll probably need a bigger cage though) or two boars who can live together. If you have one of each your options could be to get a companion for the boar, neuter him so he can live with mum and sister, or rehome him.

Good luck - keep us up to date with how you're getting on won't you :)
