A week ago, we had 2 rex babies born at work, One was fine, however one had very cloudy eyes. I haven't been at work since until today, and now his eyes look very red and sore. I've looked on Guinea Lynx and found it seems to be Entropion, where the hairs irritate the eye.
I've brought him, his mum and brother home with me to care for him to see what I can do.
I have Beaphar Eye Gel, as well as Fucithalmic eye drops, and Guinea Lynx reccommends a human eye lubricant. Which of these will be best for him, and how often? I'm worried as he is so young! I'm also going to bath the eye daily.
Will post some pictures in the morning.
Thank you!

We use lacrilube at work - it's safe for use in animals

Don't worry too much! I have often had Rex and longhaired babies born that have this problem. Usually as they get bigger, they sort of 'grow' out of it, i usually smooth vaseline round the eye to stop the hair going in, and i also pluck the hair out (you need a very steady hand for this!).
I normally use something like Golden Eye ointment, or similar - anything that soothes and lubricates is good!
If the eye has gone cloudy you will need to treat it for a good week or so, but the eyes should be fine!

Best of luck, i'm sure it will be fine.

Thanks guys :) It does look very red and sore though and is bulging a tiny bit, is this normal? I'm getting attached to him already, oops!

Has he seen a vet? As he really should be properly diagnosed before commencing any treatment. He could have poked himself in the eye and need prescription only medication

I want to take him to the vet but unfortunately my boss will not pay for veterinary treatment for the small animals. I've had the whole situation before with my pig Bailey who was from work, she had to have her eye removed after a hay poke which he refused to pay for and I had to raise £150 myself to treat her. I simply can't afford to do that again :( I know he should be seen by a vet and that I shouldn't temporarily look after him without having money for it, but it's either that or he gets ignored at work :(

If you catch a hay poke early it shouldn't cost more than around £20 (dependant on area) as a prescription drop/gel will sort it out. This is just in my experience of hay pokes (I have had three, silly accident prone wiggles)

I just don't want all your hard work to be for waste hun in case you are treating the wrong thing and the piggy stays poorly x

I'll get him to the vets if I can tomorrow, though ours charge £18 just for a consultation :(
His eyes are looking better today, less red, and he seems to not be bumping into things as often. I'm going to go and bath the eye in some warm water just to soothe it as it still looks irritated. Poor little guy :(

As already said, it's not unusual in newborns and is quite common in rex types, I'd not worry yet, but if it's looking sore rather than just cloudy a vet trip is needed. Pity your boss isn't as caring about the animals that belong to them. Can you not get your vet to send an invoice to your boss? Mind you that would probably upset him rolleyes If they dont want vet bills they shouldn't keep them, but obviously you're between a rock and a hard place on that one.

Yeah, unfortunately my boss sees the small animals as replaceable and isn't bothered by vet fees. They are looked after very well, because me and my colleague who are both knowledgable in pigs look after them, but when it comes to vets and medical issues we are restricted to what we know and the medication we have already, as the boss will not pay for anything he deems "not neccessary" :( It's a hard line between doing my best for my job, and risking losing my job. Thankfully I am now known as "guinea pig lady" at work, and if anything happens involving piggies, I'm the first to know about it.
It's all about the profits, in the end. He knows that if he needs more guineas, he can just breed more. If it was the same situation with a cow, or a miniature pig, his feelings would be very different, which is just plain unfair :(

Here he is (Rodney) with his brother, Rufus:

He's the brown agouti one (I know the white one's eye looks weird but he just happened to shut his eye when I took the photo!)

Is that the eye he has the problem with? If it is then I expect it to improve as he grows as you can hardly see anything wrong.

Sadly some people do see small animals in the way your boss does, a larger animal costs more money, and therefore it is worth paying out for treatment, where as small animals that cost £15, they just don't see the point in paying out on because its cheaper to 'replace' them with another. Very sad that some people feel that way and do feel sorry for you to be stuck in these situations.

Yes, it's both eyes. I'll take some close up pictures today, this was only taken on my phone. Really hoping it clears up, though I know I won't want to take him back!
