Hi all, I've not posted for a long time and unfortunately I'm back with some not so good news about my dear Milan.

It seemed he was fine one minute, then very poorly the next. He was hunched in the corner of the cage, laboured breathing, not eating or drinking except little bits when offered by hand, soft clumpy poo, then I noticed he seemed to be weaker down one side and tilting his head. My first thought was middle ear infection, but thought against it with him having the other symptoms too.

Anyway, we took him to the emergency vet. We saw the nurse first, who was very concerned about him and due to her reaction, we didnt think he was coming home. She said his breathing was very bad and his temperature low. He also pooped everywhere when she took his temp. She got a blanket and told us to watch closely for any changes in breathing as he may need to be put on oxygen. It was obviously a devastating wait for the vet to see us, but she seemed more positive and said she thinks it's a middle ear infection. She was not an exotic vet with it being an emergency consult, so I'm wondering whether his symptoms seem consistent with a middle ear infection. I would have thought his temperature would be high if anything and never heard of diarrhoea being connected.

He is really sad looking and moving much and its breaking my heart. How do we know when it's time to put an end to suffering? I've never had experience with a middle ear infection so have no idea whether it's easily treatable or what to expect. I'm syringe feeding as hes eating barely anything on his own.

I'm also wanting to check doses, particularly the metacam as it seems so low. Its cat strength and 0.06ml once a day. He is 1.1kg and I'm sure we've had much higher doses than that in the past. Baytril 0.78ml once a day. Do these seem right? Thanks

*Editted to add that he has not been losing weight at all and has been eating well until today

Sending you and Milan hugs. It's lovely to see you here again but I'm sorry it's under these circumstances. I can't comment on the meds but I'm sure someone quallified will be along soon. Xx

That is an incredibly low dose of cat metacam which is much less strong than dog metacam. Please call them and ask them to clarify as I suspect it is an error.

I am very sorry that Milan is so ill!

I agree about the cat metacam. 0.06 ml is the equivalent of 0.02 ml dog metacam. I strongly suspect they have made an error with decimals.
0.6 ml cat metacam is the equivalent of 0.2 ml dog metacam, given twice daily, makes much more sense.

Have just heard back from the vet and she has said that 0.06ml once a day is the correct dose :soz: he was given an injection with the metacam in originally so I'm not sure what dose was in that but I'm really worried that he could be in pain if the dose isnt strong enough. He doesnt seem to be doing well at all

Please see your usual vet tomorrow. The injection should have worn off by then.

Thank you.

I'm really sorry for the upsetting photo, but I'm worried he is suffering and seems to be going more and more downhill. He's not really moving on his own accord at all. Could he recover from this? I am just thinking of whether it may be kinder to let him go, but at the same time, I want him better if theres that chance, providing hes not suffering too much! He was not as lethargic at the vets and she didnt say how long it would take for the antibiotics to start working.

I've been trying to syringe feed, but he seems weaker now and appears to still have bits of food in his mouth. Hes not happy about me trying to open his mouth to see whether he still has a whole mouth full and therefore not swallowing at all or whether he just has little bits.

I have just put him back in his cage and he has just walked round to find somewhere to rest- albeit very wobbly

Thank you all. Sadly Milan didn't make it. I think he had something else going on given all the sudden symptoms and how poorly he was. Sleep tight Milan ❤

So sorry to hear you lost your sweet Milan.
It sounds like you did all that you could, and there was a more complex set of issues going on with him.

Thank you all. @Claire W she seems to be coping okay. She is still a timid girl though, so it's difficult to tell.

We are going on holiday next Monday, so shes off to a stay with piggy boarder. Milan was looking forward to being able to have time on the lawn at the boarders house as he's never had that before 😔 We grow grass in little pots but don't have a lawn. When we are back home, we will start to look for a friend for her.

Enjoy unlimited grass and cosy beds at the rainbow bridge Mr Man x
