Hi, I’m besides myself with worry at the moment. I think one of my boys has pneumonia, or at least a really bad URI. I saw last night (after vet closing time) that he was breathing heavily and today it was even worse. He’s making some clicking/wheezing sound. I have separated him and moved him indoors into the cool. I am also syringing him water and his mushed up veggies (I opted for this rather than critical care as it had more water and I’m worried about dehydration as it’s so hot). I have also given him some baytril which I have had left over from a previous visit to the vet with another animal.

I know there is not a lot I can do at the moment as it’s Sunday and no vets are open. I’m going to take him to the vets as early as possible tomorrow. When I’m syringing him he isn’t swallowing that much, so I’m just putting little droplets of water at the corner of his mouth and waiting a few minutes then repeating. I find after doing this he does take pick up some food but eats very slowly and very little. I read that I can put him in the bathroom with the shower on to create steam to help him breathe? Does this work? Is there anything else I can do until morning?

Does sound like pneuomonia with the clicking. My old boar had this symptom with it. I would see if you can get in an emergency vet tonight. He wont eat much because he is struggling with breathing.

I would say keep him warm and yea the shower steam is known to help

Hi!

I am very sorry about your problems. Please try and see whether a bowl of steaming water next to the cage helps ease the breathing a little. Don't stick your piggy in the shower without testing whether steam actually helps and is not making matters worse.

Please keep syringe feeding fibre little but often to keep the guts going as much as possible; as close as you can come to 40 ml to keep the guts going.

Keep him warm, but not hot.

I have collected all the emergency and severe illness care advice for better access in a crisis in this guide here: Emergency, Crisis and Bridging Care until a Vet Appointment

Fingers very firmly crossed. Unfortunately all depends on whether the antibiotic works and can kick in in time or not.
It is extremely tough and gutting when there is only relatively little you can do apart from praying and hoping while trying to get your piggy through the next long and very desperate night until you can see a vet.

HUGS

HI

Have you got a nebulizer? If so you could use that with F 10 antiseptic solution. Twice a day at least, more if you can. I have used olbas oil on a cloth tied to the cage or even in steaming water.

Good luck I hope he gets well soon.

Thanks everyone for your answers. He is at the vets at the moment. In one lung he has complete pneumonia and he is also getting bloat from breathing in air into his stomach. They are putting him on oxygen and massaging him as the bloat is the most of our worries. However, he did perk up this morning and was moving about a bit more and eating a tiny bit by himself. Its just a waiting game at the moment with our fingers crossed.
