I'm off to the vets with ginger today
she was out in the run today indoors & she was whining while peeing & i noticed her pee was a pale brown colour? with bits of whitey creamy patches in it too
so I'm gonna get her checked over today
she seems fine otherwise eating & drinking & popcorning so will see what vet says
I'm gutted
this is my first time owning piggies and I'm glad i joined the forum otherwise i wouldn't know what was normal & what wasn't so thank you guys
will keep * updated :...

Good Luck at the vets - I would advise taking along a urine sample so the vet can check the urine for blood etc...

To do this sit the guinea pig in a clean bowl, and wait when she urinates remove her from the bowl and using a sterile syringe, syringe the urine up if you don't have a sterile container just keep the syringe up right and take along to the vets with you.

Normal protacol for a UTI, would be Baytril or Septrin, Septrin is normally the preferred antibiotic as it's meant to be easier on the piggies gut. However I have never had any problem's with Baytril or Septrin. It'd be a good idea to get some probioitcs in fibreplex is very good I normally buy it from Vet UK they are very quick at dispatching.

If after the antibiotics she continue's to cry the next step would be and Xray in my experience the crying should stop after 3 - 4 days on antibiotics but you MUST always finish the prescribed course.

Let us know how you get on :) x

I have an appointment for 2.30 this afternoon so Will see what they say. have had her in a bowl for half hour no peeing yet! have taken photo of the fleece from yesterday so if i can't get a sample then maybe the photo will be helpful. Will let * know later.x

It will happen! just can take some time, try giving her a little wet veg cucumber or something... Hope the vets goes ok

well the vet has given her antibiotics (baytril)
she has a uterus infection as i showed her the photos of the fleece from yesterday & i managed to get her to wee on a white towel before i went :(|)
the vet said its not a bladder infection so I'm happy with that & she checked for stones and thankfully nothing :(|)
if it reoccurs she may have to be spayed as the vet said that some piggies can be prone to ovary tumours & these infections?
gave her the first dose just now & she wasnt amused !
it probably tastes disgusting! bless her, but its for her own good
will see how she goes
thanks all
xx

Thanks for the update, Urinary Tract infections often clear up with a course of Anti-biotics but can occasionally be stubborn. If it is Baytril (it tastes very bitter) so piggies don't like the taste, you can sweeten it with a tiny spot of no sugar Ribena. But to be honest we just get it over and done with as quickly as possible and follow up with a nice veggie treat..

Agree with Flintstones above post, that after a course of Anti-biotics an x-ray is advisable to rule out bladder stones

A probiotic is a great idea and will help with piggies Gut Flora.

Not to sure on the vets advice of Spaying - this is for tumours and ovarian cysts as opposed to UTI's. Spaying is serious surgery and is often a last resort. There are options out there for ovarian cyst's not involving surgery. But all of that is for another thread....

Lots of healing vibes to your girl, hope she feels better soon!

the vet said to add some juice to it as it is bitter lol
she hated it bless her
well i wont go down the spaying route as i've read a few posts on here !
no way , sounds awful!
will see how she goes, she's fine in herself, eating , drinking & popcorning with her nutty cage friend!
i was just a bit concerned with the colour of her wee so i'm glad i took her
just gave her a big piece of brocolli as a sorry for the yucky medicine :(|)
the vet gave her a thorough examination and she said if she had stones she would have squeaked when she was doing the exam & she couldnt feel any either so hopefully (touch wood) she will be ok after the medicine
trust me to have a ill piggie when its my first time owning them rolleyes
never mind they are worth it
i love them to little bits & my son does

I know how you feel this is our first piggies and Truffle is now back to normal after having a UTI last week, I felt so guilty given her the baytril and we couldn't help giggling everytime I tried to give it to her she nudged her head away can't believe how strong they can be! I'm sure she will soon be better Truffle was back to herself after 5 days.
Although I'm still checking on them lol!
xx

i hope my girl recovers as quick as yours do!
she is fine in herself but it was the colour of her wee i noticed so thats why i took her to the vets today.
ive bought probiotic powder too to put in her drinking water so hopefully she will be ok soon
funny little things :)
