I noticed blood in the cage three weeks ago and examined the girls only to find Peronel had a few specks of blood on her. I called the vet (it was a saturday) and they said it is fine and just keep an eye on her. The following day there was more blood on the fleece and I insisted they saw her. They examined her and said it was cystitis. She was on antibiotics for a week and I did not find any more blood. On Wednesday I found blood again and checked to see if it was coming from Peronel. It was so I made her an appointment. She was seen today and they could not work out which end it is coming from. She is now on baytril (which she hates) for five days and has a check up on Tuesday. They think it may be a kidney infection. If she is no better on Tuesday they will do more tests. The strange thing is she is eating and drinking as normal and is not making any signs of pain. I know how good piggies are at hiding pain so I just really hope she is not sore and hiding it from me. My poor little girl. She is so precious to me. :(

Uust one week of antibiotics is usually not enough to beat a cystitis; I usually insist on a full 3 week course after some bad experiences earlier on. Please have an x-ray done to exclude bladder stones or sludge.

Just wanted to send lots of love and healing vibes to Peronel x x

Awww I hope your Piggie gets better.

It's awful when you don't know what it is.

You can use urine test strips to see if there is still blood in the urine, I use the ones designed for people. Some of the other readings are always a false positive but the test for blood is worth using so you know who is having the problem and whether it is actual blood or pigmented urine.

I had unexplained blood from the nether regions, form an other wise healthy girl pig. I was very new to piggies and I panicked and took her straight to the vet, who could find nothing wrong, and ruled out UTI because she had NO raised temperature, and no other signs at all :{

I have become convinced that she ate something that cut her on the way out, and then every time she pooed the cut reopened, I even think I know what it was, I had just got the pigs and I had built them a brand new C&C cage, they had never been in anything but a small pet store cage :(, and were so excited with their new surroundings that they just HAD to nibble everything, and one of the things they found most tasty was the coroplast plastic part of the cage! rolleyes

You can find the whole saga here, http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=84939

This may not be the case with your piggie, and I would always follow the advice of the vet, but if you find them scratching their heads, and the piggie continues to keep well in herself, I just thought I'd offer my experience of mysterious blood in the cage.

Hope you get to the bottom (no pun intended) of this, and it turns out well.xx>>>

Peronel appears totally fine in herself. She is still the loudest wheeker and is eating and drinking well. She hates baytril and tries to stop me feeding it to her. It is strange that she appears so well in herself.

Peronel went for her check up today. The vet was pleased with her progress and said she thinks it was a severe urinary tract infection. Her poops have no blood and her weight is good. They want her to carry on with her medication for another two weeks. She was so good and kept still for them although she squealed at being prodded. Poor baby. We had nice cuddles when she came back home.

Great to hear that Peronel is doing so well and that your vets are keeping her on antibiotics for the time being to prevent it from coming back.

Peronel has started bleeding again. I am going to call the vet tomorrow to make an appointment. :(

I am very sorry; has she had an x-ray to exclude a stone?

Sorry to hear this, lots of healing vibes to your girl. Hope it goes well at the vets, agree with Wiebke on getting an X-ray. X x

Awwwww just read through this, healing vibes for little Peronel. Do keep us updated! Is she only on baytril at the moment?
Hugs x

They want Peronel to come in this afternoon to do tests on her bladder as well as an ultrasound. I am so worried. I love her so much. She is my first piggy along with her twin Amelia Jane.

Huge hugs, hope all goes well.

Try not to worry, I know easier said than done. You've caught it early and hopefully you can get some answers later on today. Hope it goes ok, I know how much she means to you x

try not to worry too much. I always think of worry as wasted energy, you need to keep your strength for nay treatment she needs. we have all our finger and toes crossed here.
