suspicious death

i was looking after a friends piggies while she was on holiday, she has them back 2 weeks now, and one has died suddenly.
it was a brindle abyssinian, a girl.
she was living with 2 other girls in a 4 foot cage.
I am just wondering if it is anyhting that i have done while caring for them.
I looked after them the same way i do my own.
I put them on the lawn a couple of times, as she does not have grass at her home.

Has anybody any ideas why they just suddenly die, with out any warning.
one minute she was ok then next minute shes gone.
I feel guilty
i think that she might think that it is my fault
 
Sometimes things like that happen, it wouldn't have been anything you did I'm sure
 
can anyone tell me why this happens then i can explain this to her the next time i see her. and then she doesnt think it is my fault
 
No one knows why it happens, it just does. Do you know how old they were? The thing with piggies is often by the time you realise they are ill, or not sometimes, its too late. A lot of piggies don't even dispaly symptoms
 
I think she was only about 3. she didnt have any symptoms. well not that my friend would notice anyway. she is not very educated in keeping piggies
 
It must be an awful thing to happen, the same thing happened to my friend who was looking after my piggy he, had had only been caring for her for a day and she suddenly passed away. He was devastated and really blames himself when it was not his fault. She was 3 years 10 months. It was his first time guinea pig sitting.

I am sure that it was nothing that you did, your friend wouldn't have left them in your care if she didn't trust you (((((((((hugs))))))))
 
Stop worrying, this was in no way your fault. The piggy most likely had a heart attack which would have happened at any time. Piggies of any age can just literally drop dead of heart failure and there are no warning signs and nothing you can do.The consolation is that they do not suffer.I have in the past on more than one occasion come down in the morning to find a piggy that had been fine the night before,dead on the floor.I now a lot of other people that have had this experience.I myself,and other owners,have sometimes found a previously healthy piggy dead with the head in the food bowl.They die that quickly.

This can be due to old age,but I think it is mostly genetic -the piggy is born with a heart defect which gets worse at it gets older.
 
Oh love, please don't blame yourself, sadly this can happen sooo quickly :'( :'( :'( :'( they hide things rather well.
As i said in your other thread if you know your piggies and know what they do daily you can most of the time pick up on things :)

Mary is right tho there would've been nothing you could have done, piggies are complex characters and unfortunately they can show no problems and then.. it can happen :(

Chat to your friend love, tell her your concerns and how you feel, she will then realise how much you love and care for piggies .... perhaps invite her on here and she will see that it can happen sooo quickly :( she might like to discuss her piggies death that might help her too :-\

I'm so sorry this has happened to you, how awful!

If it was anything you did, BOTH pigs would be dead wouldn't they? (And actually, even then, it probably would still be nothing to do with you) But you treated them both the same, that's what I mean.

Try not to beat yourself up about this, it just happens sometimes. Call it bad timing.


I looked after a friends dog once while she went away for a long holiday and it had kidney failure and was put on life support, they kept it alive a couple of days till she came home then she had it put to sleep but they got to see each other again and say goodbye . . . I know, it feels bad but it isn't your fault xx
