I've just got Bea out for a cuddle and noticed one of her back toes (the middle one) is swallon. It looks red and sore but I've given it a good feel and bit of a squeeze and she doesn't seem to be in any pain. Whats the best thing for this? Wash it in warm salt water?

It can be due to a number of causes, that is a really useless comment!
In the first instance leave it alone and do nothing, you will have a better idea in the morning as to whether or not the condition is improving.
In my experience it is very rare for the condition to be classed as serious and needing urgent attention. You can bathe the toe in warm salt water but I think that would be more for your benefit if you feel compelled to "do something".

If the condition is stable I would continue to watch and wait for a while.

Saffron had this from a young age, she had a fungal infection on her foot though so the cause was obvious...shame the vet didn't spot it! Vet thought Baytril would help, after nearly 2 weeks and no improvement I brought Saffron to Vedra who instantly recognised it as a fungal infection that had just got inside the nail bed.

This was nearly 2 years ago when I was down in Saffron Walden. It was amusing having a Saffron Willowrose in Saffron Walden. :))

No pain at all, just very red and swollen. She had a bit of flakiness on the skin on the feet which pointed to fungal.

She has grown into a guinea with something of a constant skin problem - extremely sensitive skin all the time, and a very fungal patch flares up in small areas every so often.

Anti-fungal (miconazole) cream applied to the foot. Vedra recommended Daktarin cream (marketed as Daktarin Gold ointment, I believe), I used an alternative miconazole cream.

Cool...I think I'll just keep an eye on it for a few days. If no change then I might bathe it in salt water, if that fails I'll see about taking her to the vet.

Just an update, I've booked Bea in to see the vets tomorrow as the toe is still swallon. I started bathing it with warm salt water today, but just worry something could be brewing in there.

Whether the nail bed is infected or what I don't know but the swelling seems to be mostly on one side of her toe, so I dunno if that means anything.

Cheers Wiebke. I just dunno! Its the damnest thing. She is absolutely fine, but its swallon and red. It almost looks like some of the nail bed could be infected as the swelling is around there.

Aaahh hope all is well with Bea, sounds like you're doing what you can, at least she doesn't sound like shes in any discomfort from what you've said!

Good luck at the vets. An anti-inflammatory (Metacam/Rimadyl) will probably be more useful than systemic antibiotics, although anything systemic (oral meds) won't be as effective as anything applied directly to the toe. I ought to research antibiotic creams and the like.

What do you think I should ask the vet for then Laura? Cuz I really wasn't impressed with them when I last took a guinea to the vets. The vet couldn't understand why my Abyssinian had a bald spot on his head and extra toes on his back feet.....not realising that for a Roan Aby, its actually quite common for extra back toes and the bald spot is on all Aby's!

My Howard (white pig) has a swollen toe on his back foot which I noticed today. I will monitor it for a few days and if gets no better I will take him up the vets just be be sure. He has no other skin complaints so lets hope it is something and nothing!

My poor pig

My piggies toe does not sem to be healing since I first noticed it 5 days ago. I am going to take him to the feets unless anyine has any other suggestions?
