Sadly, Buttons couldn’t recover after complications after a bladder stone she had a few weeks ago. I’m absolutely heartbroken as I feel I somehow failed her. I tried so hard to help her recover but her little body couldn’t keep going. I knew deep down she wouldn’t make it but I had a little glimmer of hope yesterday as she stood up at the bars and wheeked for dinner, she ate pellets for the first time in 2 week and she was even walking around looking more stable. But it turns out she was just using up her last bit of energy before she decided to leave.
It was an awful morning, I got up to give her her medicine and critical care. But she could hardly stand and wouldn’t take anything I tried to give her.
I knew. I popped her back in her cage and she started her process of dying. I didn’t think taking her to the vet to be PTS was a good idea as I didn’t think she’d even make the journey. Unfortunately it did end up taking a while, but it was peaceful, from what I could tell. It was awful watching her. Especially as I thought she was doing better yesterday. I just can’t believe it.
I had to go straight to work and take Oscar to daycare as was already 30 minutes late. So I left Buttons in the cage for Henry to say his goodbyes. It was an awful morning. I felt terrible leaving her. I felt terrible I hadn’t got the chance to take her to the vet to be PTS. But at least she died and home with her friend.
I got Buttons 3 years ago, July 22nd 2023. I adopted her from a lovely family after Buttons had lost her cage mate.
She came to me and lived with Lionheart and Emily. They were a lovely little herd who got along beautifully. Emily was really fond of Buttons and they would often clean each other. They were all similar ages and Lion was a perfect husboar to them. Sadly we lost Emily at some point to a sudden illness, But Buttons and Lion continued on.
I then had to let Lion go a couple of years ago. And Buttons was on her own for a while.
Then Henry lost his wife, So I bonded Buttons and Henry. They were both excited to have company again and lived happily together for the past year.
Buttons was a friendly pig, who enjoyed a head stroke. She was very tolerant when baby/toddler came along and was more than happy for Oscar to pat and or stare at her.
She had a beautiful fluffy coat that required a bit of grooming, and she was just ever so cute.
She had a wonderful 5 years of life. Me and Henry are going to miss her ever so much.
Sleep well Buttons xx
