Rapunzel and I went to a high school today to visit with students. They lost two students to suicide in less than a month. The students really needed a distraction from everything going on. We had 6 dogs and Rapunzel. Rapunzel did great, we sat on the floor in a quiet corner away from the dogs and the kids loved her! She has a cute way of letting me know when she has had enough. First I get this sweet face resting on my leg for awhile, then she hops into my lap and I know she needs a break. She has a pet stroller with a hidey and some treats, so she went in there and I got to pet the dogs.

It really is amazing to me how I have learned her little cues and that she really does communicate with me. So many people think they are “just rodents”. The people with the therapy dogs were really surprised by her behavior. I am educating the community about guinea pigs and what great little animals they are!

In my therapy animal course they taught us to always put your animal’s needs first and look for any cues of stress or anxiety in your pet. That’s why I love this organization, it’s all about making sure your animal is enjoying the interaction as much as the person. And even though I am the only guinea pig team in the group, they treat us the same and give Rapunzel’s work the same respect as the dogs!
