Hi everyone,

yesterday during lap time I discovered a swelling on Dippy's throat on the left site. It doesn't seem to hurt him when I touch it. I have booked him in with the vet tomorrow. I hope it's not an abscess. He was bitten about two months ago around the same area but the wound has healed fine. He is eating and drinking fine and his happy self.

Sounds like it may well be an abscess, these things can come about from an injury sustained quite some time ago! Post-neuter abscess have been known to develop months and months after the surgery.

There's no need for sedation or anesthetic to have it lanced if an abscess is the case, and it will need keeping open for a few days for regular flushing. Whether antibiotics are prescribed or not depends on the vet!

Good luck, keep us updated.

I have just been through an abscess episode with my rabbit, he had an jaw abscess which was drained and we had to flush it twice a day. Oh well, at least I know what I have to do and have all the tools if it is one and needs flushing.

I have just come back from the vets and she thinks it is an abscess, she said it might be some leftover from the bite wound, something might stayed stuck in there or it could be a tooth root problem. He's gonna get an xray and then they might lance the abscess and he will get some antibiotics as well. Poor boy, I hope he will be okay.

"Might lance the abscess?"

Shoudl have done that straight away!

Sorry what I meant was they will lance it, if it is an abscess :red.

Just got a call from the vets and it's a tooth root abscess, they lanced the abscess and there was a lot of puss in there and they also wanted to take the tooth and root out so they gave him an anaesthetic injection *** they couldn't use the gas mask and he had a bad reaction to that so they had to stop and leave the tooth in. He is now on oxygen and a head pad and he is very slowly getting round from the anaesthetics so I have to call in an hour to see how he is doing. I hope he will be okay.

Injectable anesthetics are really not the best for piggies, I'm not surprised he reacted. Fingers crossed for some good news in an hour. x

Why didn't they just drain the abscess and then, for once leave well alone/ I assume that the tooth involved was a lower incisor which has a very long root.
The phrase "tooth root abscess" doesn't say whereabouts on the root the abscess was.
I just hope he lives.

ccc4 you said what I typed and then deleted! There would be a problem with an inhalation anaesthetic for dental treatment. One of the advantages of an inhalation anaesthetic is that it is fairly easily reversed.

I have to say what I think, whether or not it evokes more criticism of what I post.
I feel that once the abscess had been drained things should have been left alone.
Why? I assume that there was no pre-operative x-ray of the jaw which would have shown an area on the film indicating the possibilty of a problem associated with a tooth. I am finding it difficult to understand how an abscess on the root can be diagnosed just by draining the abscess. The length of the root, as I said previously, would make extraction of the complete tooth difficult.

Oh no Anne, I'm sorry to hear about Dippy. I remember him being lovely when I came to see you. Poor boy. I hope he's ok.... fingers crossed.

Thanks for all your replies. He didn't make it, he died shortly after I received the phone call. I didn't know they were going to inject him and remove the tooth, they told me they only wanted to give him a bit of gas to do the xray and then drain the abscess if it was one, I only got to know that later when they had already done it. RIP Dippy and run free over the rainbowbridge.

I do my best to remain detached but just this once I am sorry to hear about your pig.
I suppose you will go through the "If only" phase of mourning, this is to be expected. You can probably guess what I might have gone on to say, but not for now.
Sad news.

I'm so sorry that he didn't make it. You did the best you could given the information you were given. *hugs*

I'm really sorry to hear this. I don't things were handled well in this case. Thinking of you x

"I don't things were handled well in this case"
For once someone has said what I restrained myself from saying, except I would have been a little more forthright.
What made it more of an "If only" moment for me was that I found out yesterday that crc is only about 45 minutes away from me.
'Ow bin you, ower kid, yo can tell where I come from cor you. No, it ay Burningham? I bet yo've got some bostin' pigs."

There is a gp knowledgeable vet not far away from you in Dudley.

I just wanted to say how sorry I was to read this thread and see that Dippy has passed away.

Poor little chap ... run free little man!
